A 1,1,4,4-tetraphenyl-1,3-butadiene derivatives represented by formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents a di-lower alkylamino group, and R.sub.2 represents a hydrogen atom or a di-lower alkylamino group, is disclosed, which has useful characteristics such as excellent static charge retention ability. An electrophotographic light-sensitive material using the foregoing derivative can satisfy the requirements, e.g., for high sensitivity, low residual potential, less light fatigue even after repeated use, and excellent durability.

The object of the invention is to provides a process in which a high-molecular-weight &bgr;-butyrolactone homopolymer or copolymer being biodegradable, absorbable into the living body, useful as a functional polymeric material and superior in physical characteristics is produced with high yield and good productivity. This object is solved by a process for producing the homopolymer or copolymer of the invention, which comprises ring-opening polymerization of sole &bgr;-butyrolactone subjected previously to acid removal and dehydration treatment, or of said &bgr;-butyrolactone with other lactones, in the presence of a tin compound represented by the following formula (1) and/or formula (2): wherein R1 and R2 and R4 to R7 independently represent an alkyl group containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms which may have a branched chain, or a cycloalkyl group containing 5 to 7 carbon atoms, or a phenyl or naphthyl group which may have a substituent group, R3 represents an alkylene group containing 2 to 12 carbon atoms which may have a substituent group, a cyclopentane-1,2-ylene group or a cyclohexane-1,2-ylene group, and n is an integer of 1 to 10.

This invention relates to a novel lipid composition for use in cosmetics capable of increasing moisture-keeping ability or barrier function of the stratum corneum, protecting the skin and improving dry or rough skin, and to products which use the same, such as cosmetics and medicaments. Particularly, it relates to a lipid composition which comprises at least one component (A) selected from the group consisting of a 2-acylaminoalkane-1,3-diol and optically active compounds thereof, at least one component (B) selected from the group consisting of a 2-acylaminoalkane-1,3-diol in which at least one of the &agr;-position and &bgr;-position of the acyl group is substituted with hydroxyl group and optically active compounds thereof and at least one component (C) selected from sterols, wherein the components (A), (B) and (C) are mixed at a ratio that constructs a liquid crystal structure, and to products which contain the lipid composition, such as cosmetics and medicaments.

The invention has an object of safely and simply preparing a large amount of a ruthenium metathesis catalyst, which is used as a catalyst for a carbon-carbon bond formation using, particularly, a metathesis reaction. The metathesis catalyst has the following complex composition (A) or (B). The composition (A) includes RuX12(arene)(PR1R2R3) and R4CHX22, R5C≡CH or R4CHX2 and a reducing agent, wherein X1 and X2 respectively are a halogen atom; arene is a hydrocarbon having a benzene ring; R1, R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, respectively are an alkyl group having 1-8 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 3-8 carbon atoms or an optionally substituted aryl group, wherein the substituent group is an alkyl group having 1-8 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group having 1-8 carbon atoms, an alkylamino group having 1-8 carbon atoms or a halogen atom; R4 is an alkyl group which has 1-8 carbon atoms and may have an ether bond or an ester bond, an optionally subsituted aryl group, wherein the substituent group is a halogen atom or a hydroxyl group; or cycloalkyl group having 3-8 carbon atoms; and R5 is an optionally substituted alkyl group which has 1-8 carbon atoms and may have an ether bond or an ester bond, wherein the substituent group is a halogen atom or a hydroxyl group, an aryl group or a cycloalkyl group having 3-8 carbon atoms. An antiferroelectric liquid crystal compound represented by the following general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents an alkyl group having 6 to 16 carbon atoms; R.sup.2 represents a straight chain alkyl group having 3 to 8 carbon atoms or a branched alkyl group having 4 to 10 carbon atoms; and * means an asymmetric carbon atom, and an antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition comprising at least one liquid crystal compound as defined above. The optically active compound of the present invention is highly miscible with a number of known antiferroelectric liquid crystal compounds and thus capable of providing liquid crystal materials having improved temperature properties. A liquid crystal composition containing the optically active compound of the present invention is applicable to electro-optical devices with the use of antiferroelectric liquid crystals.
