Abstract: A method of manufacturing a variable reflectance mirror reflective element suitable for use in a vehicular rearview mirror assembly includes providing a front glass sheet and a plurality of rear glass substrates, and joining and spacing the rear glass substrates at the front glass sheet via perimeter seals. After the rear glass substrates are joined with the front glass sheet, the front glass sheet is cut to form a plurality of front glass substrates. A back plate is attached at the rear side of each of the rear glass substrates. After cutting the front glass sheet, the back plate of the respective rear glass substrate and cut front glass substrate portion is fixtured at a finishing tool, which processes the cut edges of at least the respective front glass substrate to provide a finished perimeter edge of the front glass substrate to form a variable reflectance mirror reflective element.

Abstract: A vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly includes a mirror casing and an electro-optic mirror reflective element. The front glass substrate of the reflective element has a planar first surface, a planar second surface and a periphery surface extending therebetween. The mirror casing includes a central mounting element and two spaced apart attachment surfaces. The rear glass substrate of the reflective element is adhesively attached at the attachment surfaces. The central mounting element includes a pivot element that pivotally mounts at a mounting structure. A central cavity exists between the central mounting element and the rear glass substrate. The mirror assembly includes a curved outer surface that provides a rounded transition between the planar first surface of the front glass substrate and a less-curved outer surface of a side all of the mirror casing. No part of the mirror casing encroaches onto the planar first surface of the front glass substrate.

Abstract: A method of making a mirror substrate for a vehicular mirror assembly includes providing a glass substrate and fixturing the glass substrate at a fixture to support the glass substrate. A rotatable grinding wheel is presented to the front perimeter portion of the glass substrate and the front perimeter portion of the glass substrate is ground to establish a ground rounded surface about and around the periphery of the glass substrate. After grinding the front perimeter portion of the glass substrate to establish the ground rounded surface, a rotatable polishing wheel is presented to the ground rounded surface and the ground rounded surface is polished to establish a polished rounded surface about and around the periphery of the glass substrate. The polished rounded surface provides a smooth transition between the front surface of the glass substrate and a rear portion of the circumferential perimeter edge of the glass substrate.

Abstract: A vision system for a vehicle includes an interior rearview mirror assembly disposed at an interior surface of the vehicle and having a mirror head and a reflective element. The mirror head is adjustably mounted at a mirror mount that attaches at the interior surface of the vehicle and is adjustable to adjust a rearward view of a driver of the vehicle viewing said reflective element. A display device is disposed at an interior portion of the vehicle remote from the interior rearview mirror assembly. The mirror head is adjustable between a mirror mode orientation, where the driver of the vehicle views rearward of the vehicle via the reflective element, and a display mode orientation, where the driver of the vehicle views images displayed by the display device via the reflective element.

Abstract: A rearview vision system for a vehicle includes a driver side rearview mirror element, a passenger side rearview mirror element, and a camera at or near the rear portion of the vehicle. The rearview mirror elements provide respective regulation required fields of view rearward and sideward of the vehicle to a driver of the vehicle. A driver side display and a passenger side display are configured to be disposed at an interior of the vehicle so as to display images representative of captured image data for viewing by the driver of the vehicle when normally operating the vehicle. The displayed images provide a desired wider sideward and rearward field of view beyond the regulation required fields of view of the mirror elements, such that the side mirror assemblies need not include a larger reflective element.

Abstract: A vehicular exterior rearview mirror assembly includes a mirror head portion and a reflective element having a glass substrate and a mirror reflector coated at a surface of the glass substrate. The reflective element is configured to provide a rearward field of view of at least about 15 degrees relative to a side of the vehicle and provides a substantially undistorted reflected image as viewed by the vehicle driver. The glass substrate is formed utilizing a bending element having a free form curvature. The reflective element, when accommodated by the mirror head portion at the side of the vehicle and as viewed by the driver, includes an image plane that establishes an object plane. Coordinates of the image plane and of the object plane are determined, at least in part, by the mirror size and by the free form curvature of the bending element used to form the glass substrate.

Abstract: A vehicular driver monitoring system includes a vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly having a mirror head that accommodates a variable reflectance mirror reflective element. A camera is accommodated by the mirror head and views through the variable reflectance mirror reflective element. A light emitter is accommodated by the mirror head and is electrically operable to emit near infrared (NIR) light that passes through the mirror reflective element. Responsive to detection of glare light at the variable reflectance mirror reflective element, the vehicular driver monitoring system electrically reduces the reflectance of the variable reflectance mirror reflective element. Responsive to determining presence of a passenger, the vehicular driver monitoring system limits electrical reduction of the reflectance of the variable reflectance mirror reflective element so that the variable reflectance mirror reflective element provides at least a first minimum threshold transmission level of NIR light passing through the variable reflectance mirror reflective element.

Abstract: A vehicular exterior rearview mirror assembly includes a mirror head mounted at a mounting structure. An electro-optic reflective element is attached at an attachment element that attaches at an electrically powered actuator accommodated by the mirror head. The reflective element has a front glass substrate having a first thickness less than 2.3 mm and a rear glass substrate having a second thickness less than or equal to 1.6 mm. The first and second perimeter edges of the glass substrates combine to provide a curved transition from a first surface of the front glass substrate and an outer surface of the mirror head. The mirror head includes a protruding portion that is at least partially received at a notched region of the rear glass substrate. An outer surface of the protruding portion corresponds with the second perimeter edge of the rear glass substrate at the notched region.
