Abstract: Communication device with configurable antenna interface and method for configuring an antenna interface. One implementation of the communication device includes an RF transceiver, a threaded coaxial antenna connector, a first RF terminal, a second RF terminal, an RF signal conduit, and an interface circuit. The threaded coaxial antenna connector includes inner and outer terminals. The RF signal conduit includes a first structure that couples the first RF terminal to the inner terminal of the threaded coaxial antenna connector. The RF signal conduit further includes a second structure that couples the second RF terminal to the outer terminal of the threaded coaxial antenna connector. The interface circuit is configured to set an SMA antenna interface mode by coupling the RF transceiver to the first RF terminal. The interface circuit is also configured to set a ferrule antenna interface mode by coupling the RF transceiver to the second RF terminal.

Abstract: An antenna (100) enables improved multi-band operation for a portable communication device, such as a portable two-way radio. The antenna structure is formed of a first radiator element (104) fed through a single radio frequency (RF) feed port (118) and terminated on the input of a transmission line (108). The transmission line (108) is routed along a ground plane reference mass (102) towards a second radiator element (106). Applying the antenna structure to a radio embodiment, the first radiator element (104) is placed at a bottom side of a portable radio device, the first radiator element being fed through the single RF feed port and terminated on the input of the transmission line. The transmission line is routed along the ground plane reference mass towards the second radiator element placed on a top side of the portable radio.

Abstract: An antenna (100) with an embedded wideband matching substrate (102) is provided. The substrate (102) comprises impedance matching circuitry (300) providing a low frequency (LF) matching circuit (330) and a high frequency (HF) matching circuit (340) for tri-band operation. A stripline (314) having a stripline ground (324) is disposed on the substrate. The stripline (314) provides a matching element and the stripline ground (324) provides a common ground (324) for both the HF and LF matching circuits. The substrate (102) is shaped with a tabular portion (106) which facilitates encasing the substrate (102) within a casing (118). The tabular portion (106) further provides an alignment feature for wrapping of a flexible radiating element about the casing and flexible antenna rod (126) to complete the antenna structure (100).

Abstract: A hybrid antenna structure allows the antenna to be used internally or mostly internally in a portable radio communication device operating in the VHF range. The hybrid antenna structure includes a switching circuit that connects an RF circuit to one of several points along the length of a wrapped conductor element, depending on the selected operating frequency. An inductive matching tail element is adjustably tuned to match the selected tap point on the wrapped conductor for the selected operating frequency.
