    摘要: An optical isolator not dependent on the plane of polarization of an incident beam and does not allow the plane of polarization to change on the outgoing side. The optical isolator comprises a first parallel flat double refractive crystal substance; a first Faraday rotor for rotating the plane of polarization of a beam; a second parallel flat double refractive crystal substance; a second Faraday rotor for rotating the plane of polarization in a direction opposite to that in which said first Faraday rotor rotates the plane of polarization; a third parallel flat double refractive substance; a fourth parallel flat double refractive substance; and permanent magnets for magnetizing the Faraday rotor and second Faraday rotors.     摘要: A repeater station 10 detects whether or not an abnormality exists in each of signal light and monitor light having arrived from a terminal station 1 or a repeater station 20, and controls, according to the result of detection, operations of optical amplifiers 11 and 12 and the monitor light. In the case where both of the signal light and monitor light arriving from the terminal station 1 via the optical transmission line for the downstream direction are abnormal, the optical amplifier 11 for the downstream direction stops its amplifying operation by itself, whereas a monitor control apparatus 13 stops the amplifying operation of the other optical amplifier for the upstream direction and also stops transmitting the monitor light to the terminal station 1 in the upstream direction.

    摘要: In a chromatic dispersion compensator, an optical signal directing unit such as an optical circulator or a directional coupler having a first, second, third and fourth ports. The optical signal directing unit directs an optical signal inputted from one of the ports to another port of the ports. A reflection-type compensator including a dispersion compensating fiber, a reflecting portion and changing unit for changing a polarization direction of a reciprocating signal light, in which the dispersion compensating fiber is connected to the reflecting portion via the changing unit. An input transmission path which is connected to the first port; and an output transmission path which is connected to the fourth port so that the signal light is outputted from the fourth port. The reflection-type compensating unit is connected to one of the second and third ports, and the chirped grating is connected to the other port.

    摘要: A chromatic dispersion compensator includes an optical circulator or a directional coupler having a first, second and third ports; an input transmission path connected to the first port; an output transmission path connected to the third port; a chirped grating connected to the second port; and a dispersion compensating fiber connected to at least one of the first, second and third ports. The dispersion compensating fiber and the chirped grating have chromatic dispersion characteristics which are opposite to the chromatic dispersion characteristics of the input and output transmission paths. In the wavelength compensator, the optical signal is incident into the first port from the input transmission path, and is made to go out to the chirped grating from the second port. Further, the optical signal is incident from the chirped grating to return to the second port, and is made to go to the output transmission path from the third port.

    摘要: This invention relates to an optical fiber amplifier for amplifying and outputting input signal light. The optical fiber amplifier includes first to third amplification optical fibers. The first to third optical fibers are arranged such that the signal light passes through the first to third optical fibers in the order named. A first value as the (emission cross-section)/(absorption cross-section) of the first optical fiber and a third value as the (emission cross-section)/(absorption cross-section) of the third optical fiber are set to be larger than a second value as the (emission cross-section)/(absorption cross-section) of the second optical fiber. With this arrangement, low noise can be achieved in the first optical fiber, and a large output can be achieved in the third optical fiber. In addition, the gain characteristics associated with wavelength in this optical fiber amplifier as the overall transmission line including the first, second, and third amplification optical fibers can be sufficiently flattened.

    摘要: A bi-directional optical communication system. A first optical fiber includes a plurality of pieces, each piece having a first and second end. An optical amplifier for amplifying optical signals transmitted in a first direction is coupled to first and second pieces of the first optical fiber. A second optical fiber is coupled to the first and second pieces, bypasses the optical amplifier and transmits optical signals in a second direction opposite to the first direction. A first optical signal generator apparatus coupled to the first piece of the first optical fiber provides optical signals propagating in the first direction to a optical receiver apparatus coupled to the second piece of the first optical fiber. A second optical signal generator in the optical receiver apparatus provides optical signals propagating in the second direction to the first optical signal generator apparatus. A second optical receiver and a monitor, both in the first optical signal generator apparatus, receive the optical signals propagating in the second direction and monitor various operating conditions of the optical communication system.
