An ignition system for internal combustion engines wherein an ignition timing computer circuit starts the computation of an ignition timing in response to the detection of a predetermined angular position of the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine by an angular position detector, and an ignition device ignites the engine according to the computed ignition timing. A pressure detector detects variations of the pressure in the cylinders caused by the ignition of the engine and a retard-advance detector determines whether the angular position of the engine crankshaft corresponding to the maximum cylinder pressure agrees with the desired angular position. This retard-advance detector compensates the computation of ignition timing in the ignition timing computer circuit in accordance with its determination. In this way, the ignition timing of the engine is feedback controlled in such a manner that the pressure in the individual cylinders reaches a maximum value at the desired angular position of the crankshaft.

A spark plug comprises a center electrode fixed to a leg portion which is exposed into the combustion chamber of an engine and comprises a ground electrode which is bent so that its end opposes the forward end of the center electrode whereby discharge is produced between the ground electrode and the center electrode. The ground electrode includes a discharging surface not opposing a first side end portion of the center electrode which is near the bent portion, but opposing a second side end portion of the center electrode which is remote from the bent portion of the ground electrode. The discharging surface of the ground electrode may be provided by forming a projection or groove at the opposing end of the ground electrode.

A semiconductor pressure sensor having a cylindrical housing with an opening formed at its tip end which is exposed to a pressure atmosphere and a metal diaphragm for receiving pressure, which is formed in a wall of the cylindrical housing defining the opening. A metal oxide layer is formed in a surface of the metal diaphragm by oxidizing the surface of the metal diaphragm, and a glass layer is formed on the metal oxide layer. A semiconductor chip, on which a strain gauge is formed, is firmly and surely bonded to the metal diaphragm through the glass layer by virtue of the metal oxide layer. This semiconductor pressure sensor can measure high pressure with sufficient sensitivity and high accuracy.

The pressure sensor has a housing, a sensing body mounted inside an internal space of the housing and having a cavity, one end thereof being open and other end thereof being closed, to form a pressure introducing portion therein, the closed end thereof having a thin thickness forming a diaphragm for receiving a pressure, and a semiconductor chip mounted on one surface of the closed end opposite to the diaphragm for receiving a pressure. The pressure sensor is characterized in that the sensing body is attenuated at a portion including at least the closed end thereof and has a diameter smaller than that of the remaining portion thereof, and a shoulder is provided therebetween, whereby the sensing body is fixedly connected to the internal space of said housing by abutting the shoulder thereof against a stopper portion provided in the internal space of the housing and the external surface thereof is placed in contact with the inner surface of the internal space of the housing. The pressure sensor having the above construction is highly sensitive and can accurately measure a pressure of a high pressure fluid, as the sensing body is firmly fixed to the inner surface of the housing and has a simple construction.

The ignition device includes a light emission apparatus opened to the combustion chamber to emit a light beam into the chamber, and a particle supply apparatus disposed in opposed relation with the light emission apparatus for supplying into the combustion chamber particles of a high light absorption index separately from the fuel-air mixture. The particles from the particle supply apparatus are emitted along the optical axis of the light beam into the combustion chamber and are heated at a position suitable for ignition of the fuel-air mixture within the combustion chamber to serve as an ignition source.

There is provided a fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine comprising fuel injection means provided for each of the cylinders of the engine, a main computing circuit for determining the timing of the injection and the duration of the injection in accordance with the charging and discharging of electric energy corresponding to the number of revolutions of the engine and the quantity of air drawn thereinto and generating pulse signals, a distribution circuit for distributing the pulse signals to the fuel injection means, and a reference signal generating circuit for generating an electric signal to complete the charging of electric energy in the main computing circuit within 720.degree./(2 .times. the number of cylinders) of crank travel, whereby the construction of the system is simplified since there is no need to modify in any way the conventional fuel injection valves or the like and provide the main computing circuit for each of the cylinders, and moreover fuel can be separately injected into each cylinder in turn in accordance with the firing order of the engine.
