摘要: Provided is an illumination unit capable of utilizing back light. Also provided are a display and an electronic apparatus each including this illumination unit. A display includes a display panel, and an illumination unit configured to illuminate the display panel. The illumination unit includes a light-guiding plate, a diffusion modulation device, and a reflection modulation device in this order, from the display panel side. The light-guiding plate has a light source on a side face thereof. The diffusion modulation device is capable of performing modulation between a first state of diffusing light from the light source, and a second state of allowing incident light from a back face side to pass to a front face side. The reflection modulation device is capable of performing modulation between a third state of reflecting transmitted diffused light of the diffusion modulation device to a front face side, and a fourth state of allowing incident light from a back face side to the front face side.

摘要: The present invention provides an illuminating apparatus locally reducing light intensity without depending on the configuration of a light source itself. An illuminating apparatus used as a backlight of a display apparatus having a liquid crystal display panel with a pair of first polarizers, including a light source and a liquid crystal light control panel. The liquid crystal light control panel has a pair of second polarizers and suppresses amount of transmission of light from the light source, thereby allows the light from the light source to have such a light intensity distribution along a plane that light intensity is locally reduced. The polarization degree in the second polarizers is optimized so that transmission light amount ratio of the second polarizers is lower than that of the first polarizers.

摘要: A liquid-crystal display that can inhibit the coloring of an image when a liquid-crystal panel is viewed from an oblique direction is provided. An optical filter is disposed at the forward end of a liquid-crystal panel and has different transmittances between a light component that travels in an oblique direction and a light component that travels in a direction normal to the multilayer, where both of the light components have a predetermined wavelength range. In the case where a wide-color-gamut light source, such as LEDs, is used as a light sources of a backlight unit, when the liquid-crystal panel is viewed from an oblique direction, the entire image area tends to be reddish, and the color temperature tends to decrease. In this case, the optical filter is configured such that the intensity of a visible red light component is selectively reduced such that the intensity of a visible blue light component is increased, thereby inhibiting the reddening of an image area when viewed from an oblique direction.

摘要: An image display apparatus and an image display method capable of suppressing the color breakup occurring during eye tracking of a picture with motion in a field-sequential display are provided. A display section (a display panel 2 and a backlight 3) time-divisionally displays, in a manner of the field-sequential display, field images of plural colors in a display sequence controlled by a display sequence control section 12. The display sequence of the field images of plural colors is controlled to allow a composite luminance distribution perceived by a viewer on his retina to have a predetermined profile, the composite luminance distribution being created based on a group of field images which configures a frame or two frames in successive time sequence in a picture with motion displayed on the display section, the predetermined profile having highest luminance in a mid-range thereof and having luminance getting lower toward a periphery thereof to spread with bilateral-symmetry.
