11 Beta -ALKOXY- Delta 4-GONENES OF THE FORMULA WHEREIN R and X are alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R1 is a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and acyl of an organic carboxylic acid of 1 to 18 carbon atoms and Y and Y'' are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl and the enolic esters thereof with an organic carboxylic acid of 1 to 18 carbon atoms which possess anti-androgenic and anti-estrogenic activity, their preparation and novel intermediates.

A novel process for introducing a 10-hydrocarbon group into a Delta 9(11)-19-nor-steroid by reacting a 13 Beta -lower alkylDelta 5(10),9(11)-19-nor steroid with a per carboxylic acid to form a mixture of the corresponding 5 Alpha ,10 Alpha - and 5 Beta ,10 Beta -epoxy steroids and reacting the latter with a hydrocarbon magnesium halide to form the corresponding 10hydrocarbon-13 Beta -lower alkyl-5-hydroxy- Delta 9(11)-19-norsteroid and to novel intermediates.
