A method for mitigating current distortion on inverter supply lines that supply a load with power from a PWM inverter, the inverter including a switch and diode bridge constructed using devices that are characterized by losses that cause current distortion, the invert, lines and load together characterized by inductive and capacitive dynamics that also cause line current distortions, the method including identifying both a device drop error due to device operating characteristics and a system related dynamics error due to interaction of system components and using those errors along with a more conventional dead time compensation scheme to modify modulating waveforms used in PWM comparison by a controller.

A method and apparatus for compensating for deviations in the alternating voltage produced by a PWM inverter. The necessary sequence in which inverter components must be triggered results in voltage error pulses that accumulate over time and result in deviations from ideal voltage at motor terminals. By allowing the error pulses to continue and adjusting the trigger times to compensate for the error pulses, the effect of the error pulses is negated and the voltage deviations are eliminated.

A system and method for controlling an inverter of a motor control unit includes a controller having a user interface configured to allow user selection of a waveform increment value or a waveform amplitude threshold. The controller also includes an integrator configured to receive the waveform increment value and generate a signal at least based on the waveform increment value. A logic circuit is configured to monitor the signal and reset the integrator when the signal reaches the waveform amplitude threshold to generate a waveform having a frequency-independent amplitude. A comparator compares the waveform to a modulating signal to trigger gating pulses delivered to an inverter to drive an associated motor.

A method and apparatus to be used with a motor controller generating firing pulses to control an inverter, the inverter providing exciting voltage to a motor corresponding to the firing pulses, the voltage having a maximum intended amplitude, the method for substantially eliminating exciting voltage overvoltage by modifying the firing pulses, the method comprising the steps of identifying characteristics of an initial firing pulse, comparing the initial pulse characteristics to an overvoltage characteristic set known to cause overvoltage, where the initial pulse characteristics match the overvoltage characteristic set, altering the initial firing pulse such that the altered firing pulse does not cause overvoltage, identifying an accumulated error corresponding to the altered firing pulse, modifying the firing pulse following the altered firing pulse as a function of the accumulated error to generate a composite firing pulse; and repeating the identifying, comparing, altering, identifying and modifying process with the composite firing pulse as the initial firing pulse.

A method and apparatus for eliminating greater than twice motor over voltage by altering modulating signals provided to a PWM controller which in turn provides firing pulses to a PWM inverter. The modulating waves are altered by either tying them to positive or negative DC buses or limiting their maximum magnitudes when their instantaneous characteristics are known to cause greater than twice overvoltage. The modulating waveforms are altered in a symmetrical fashion so that the resulting fundamental terminal voltages remain essentially unchanged.

The present techniques include methods and systems for operating an inverter to maintain a lifespan of the inverter. In some embodiments, the switching frequency and/or the output current of the inverter may be changed such that stress may be reduced on the inverter bond wires of the inverter. More specifically, embodiments involve calculating the aging parameters for certain operating conditions of the inverter and determining whether the operating conditions result in aging the inverter to a point which reduces the inverter lifespan below a desired lifespan. If the operating conditions reduce the inverter lifespan below the desired lifespan, the switching frequency may be reduced to a lower or minimum switching frequency of the inverter and/or the output current of the inverter may be reduced to a maximum output current at the minimum switching frequency.

The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for detecting ground faults (i.e., line-to-ground faults) in electrical power conversion systems. In particular, the embodiments described herein include a common mode voltage booster module configured to calculate a common mode voltage boost factor and a common mode voltage boost function based on a plurality of voltage commands for the system. The common mode voltage boost factor and/or the common mode voltage boost function may be applied to the voltage commands to generate boosted voltage commands which, when applied to an inverter or converter, source current indicative of ground faults in the system. More specifically, the common mode voltage boost factor may be multiplied by a common mode voltage calculated by a common mode voltage calculator and summed with the voltage commands. In addition, the common mode voltage boost function may be summed with the voltage commands after the voltage commands have been summed with the common mode voltage boost factor.
