    Abstract: Methods and processes for the production of valuable organic products and alcohols from biomass material using a closed-loop process having numerous advantages over prior production methods are described. In the process, the biomass is subjected to acid-catalyzed digestion, followed by a separation of the digestion product stream into a solid product stream and a liquid product stream, the liquid product stream thereafter undergoing acid-catalyzed dehydration in the presence of an organic solvent, and thereafter separating the organic products in the organic layer from the aqueous layer. During the process, aqueous and organic fluid streams are fed back into various portions of the production process to increase the concentration of active portions and maximize product recovery.

    Abstract: A process for preparing glycols from a lignocellulosic solid biomass involves contacting the biomass with an organic solvent comprising a low boiling point alcohol and a pre-treatment acid at a temperature in a range from 80 to 220° C. and a pressure in a range from 1 to 50 bara. The resulting mixture, having less than wt. % water, is separated into a pre-treated solid residue comprising cellulose and a liquid stream comprising dissolved lignin. The pre-treated solid residue is subjected to a hydrogenolysis reaction. generating a glycols stream, a lights stream, comprising a first portion of organic solvent, and a heavies stream. At least part of the liquid stream is separated to produce a second portion of organic solvent and a lignin stream. At least part of the first and second portions of organic solvent is recycled to the contacting step.

    Abstract: The invention relates to an integrated process for the production of ethylene and vinyl acetate (VAM), comprising contacting in a first reaction zone a gas stream comprising ethane and optionally ethylene with an oxygen-containing gas stream in the presence of a oxydehydrogenation catalyst under oxidative dehydrogenation conditions to produce a first product stream comprising ethane, ethylene, acetic acid and water, and optionally other compounds, separating said first product stream in a vapor permeation unit into a second stream comprising water and a third stream comprising ethane, ethylene, acetic acid, and optionally other gaseous compounds, contacting in a second reaction zone all or at least a portion of said third stream with a stream comprising concentrated acetic acid and with an oxygen-containing gas stream in the presence of a VAM catalyst, to produce a fourth product stream comprising vinyl acetate, acetic acid, ethane, ethylene, water, carbon dioxide, and optionally other compounds, separating said fourth product stream in a vinyl acetate separation zone into a fifth stream comprising vinylacetate, acetic acid, water and optionally other condensable compounds, and a sixth stream comprising ethylene, ethane, carbon dioxide and optionally other gaseous compounds, and recovering vinyl acetate from said fifth stream. The invention further relates to a reaction system for carrying out the process.

    Abstract: A reinforced composite material comprises a blend of a thermoplastic matrix and cellulosic fibers, wherein the thermo-plastic matrix comprises a tarry residue fraction from a lignocellulosic biomass liquefaction process. A process for the manufacture of the reinforced composite material comprises subjecting a lignocellulosic biomass to liquefaction in the presence of a liquefaction solvent to form a liquefaction product and a tarry residue; separating the tarry residue from the liquefaction product; and blending the tarry residue with cellulosic fibers to form a recyclable reinforced thermoplastic composite material.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a process for the production of furan, said process comprising the steps of: i) contacting furfural with a decarbonylation catalyst in a decarbonylation reactor to produce a gaseous decarbonylation reaction product stream comprising furan and carbon monoxide; ii) contacting said gaseous decarbonylation reaction product stream with a solvent stream comprising furfural; iii) absorbing at least a portion of the furan present in the gaseous decarbonylation reaction product stream into the solvent stream to provide a furan-containing solvent stream and a gaseous stream comprising carbon monoxide; iv) separating the furan from the furan containing solvent stream by distillation to provide a first furan stream; and v) using at least a portion of the remaining solvent stream comprising furfural as at least a portion of the furfural provided to the decarbonylation reactor.
