A carbon black graft polymer which excels in stability of dispersion in various media, coloring property, and imperviousness to light is obtained by mixing under heating a block- or graft-copolymer having a segment (A) containing a reactive group capable of reacting with a functional group on the surface of carbon black and a segment (B) different in skeletal structure from the segment (A) with carbon black. The carbon black graft polymer, by causing the graft chain thereof to incorporate therein an ethylenically unsaturated double bond and/or a carboxyl group, is enabled to manifest photosensitivity, developability with an alkali, and insulating property and acquire usefulness for a black photocurable resin composition such as, for example, the material for the formation of a black matrix particularly in a color filter.

A process for preparing an aqueous resin dispersion includes the steps of copolymerizing a polymeric monomer whose ratio of (meth) acrolein to a total amount of the (meth) acrolein and a vinyl monomer is in the range from 10 weight % to 80 weight % in an organic solvent to obtain a copolymer solution, dispersing the obtained copolymer solution in an aqueous medium and removing an unreacted (meth) acrolein. Since the above process can extremely reduce contents of the unreacted (meth) acrolein and of an oligomer whose number-average molecular weight is less than 1000, an aqueous resin dispersion where problems of a pungent smell, toxicological properties, etc. due to the (meth) acrolein and the oligomer are eliminated can be provided.

A thermosensitive recording material comprising a recording layer formed on a substrate and a coating film layer formed thereon, wherein the recording layer is of a bilayer structure composed of a first thermosensitive layer on the side of the lower layer and a second thermosensitive layer on the side of the upper layer and particles are dispersed in at least one of the first and second thermosensitive layers. An original plate for lithographic printing can be produced from a combination of an ink-philic resin and an ink-repelling resin as the compositional materials of such thermosensitive layers. Besides, thermosensitive, recording materials for magnetic recording, thermosensitive materials for electrostatic recording, thermosensitive recording materials for colored image recording and the like, can be generated through a variety of modifications of the compositional materials. Then, the use of such thermosensitive recording materials attains thermosensitive recording at a higher precision through simple processes and procedures.

Provided herein are a copolymer obtained by copolymerizing at least an ultraviolet-stable polymerizable monomer and a cycloalkyl group-containing polymerizable monomer, a process for producing said copolymer, and a coating composition containing said copolymer. The copolymers retains outstanding weather resistance over a long period of time owing to the multiplicated effect of an ultraviolet-stable monomer and a cycloalkyl group-containing polymerizable monomer, and the coating composition containing the copolymer forms a coating film having superior gloss, buildability, solvent resistance, and chemical resistance.
