Provided is a method of converting an anionic living end to a protected free radical “living” end in a well-controlled manner, which enables copolymerization by plural mechanisms. The method is particularly useful for copolymerization of anionically polymerizable monomers and free radical polymerizable monomers, and therefore useful for production of PB-g-PS, HIPS, ABS, and MBS etc. Also provided is a reversibly coupled polymer, which, when decoupled, generates “living” free radical for further copolymer chain reaction.

The present invention provides silica-filled, vulcanized elastomeric compounds comprising an elastomer mixed with at least a silica filler, a processing aid, and a curing agent, and processes for the preparation of the same. Generally, the present invention provides processing aids which effectively reduce or replace the amount (i.e., about 10 percent by weight based upon the silica filler) of the processing aid bis[3-triethyoxysilyl)propyl]tetrasulfide (“Si69”) used in the production of silica-filled rubber stocks. These new processing aids include alkyl alkoxysilanes, fatty acid esters of hydrogenated and non-hydrogenated sugars and the polyoxyethylene derivatives thereof, and combinations thereof, with or without various non-reinforcing fillers such as mineral fillers. The processing aids do not hinder the physical properties of the compounds and have been found to be excellent substitutes for Si69. The processing aids may be supported on the silica filler or any of the other fillers employed in the composition for improved handling, safety and performance. Processes for the preparation of the silica filled vulcanizable elastomers are provided as well as pneumatic tires employing tread stock comprising the novel vulcanizable elastomers.

The reduction of hysteresis in a silica-filled, vulcanized elastomeric compound is produced by mixing diene monomer and optionally monovinyl aromatic monomer with a lithium amine initiator and, optionally, a modifier; effecting polymerization conditions; terminating polymerization with an amino group producing terminator to form an amine functionalized diene elastomer; compounding the amine functionalized diene elastomer with an amorphous silica filler and a vulcanization agent; and, effecting vulcanization. A pneumatic tire tread stock incorporating the vulcanized elastomer compound exhibits improved reduced hysteresis, or highly balanced wet traction, rolling resistance, snow/ice traction, and mechanical strength when compounded with silica filler and vulcanized, in the tire.

A (halomethyl arene)-modified elastomer is made by reacting a lithium terminated elastomer intermediate with the halogen atoms of a halomethyl vinyl arene compound. A road-contacting tread component for a pneumatic tire is fabricated from vulcanized elastomer made by vulcanizing an elastomer composition of a (halomethyl arene)-modified elastomer, a carbon black reinforcing agent, and a sulfur-based vulcanizing system. A process for making a (halomethyl arene)-modified elastomer includes polymerizing at least one diene monomer with a lithium-containing initiator, capping the lithium terminated elastomer by reaction with a halomethyl arene compound, and recovering the modified elastomer.

Modification of lithium-terminated elastomer intermediates by reaction under anionic conditions with 1,3,2-dioxastannolanes provides tin-containing elastomers with improved hysteresis properties. In specific examples, modification of a lithium-terminated styrene-butadiene rubber with a dioxastannolane derived from reaction of dibutyl tin(IV)oxide with an alkyl-substituted 1,3-pentane provides tin-modified SBRs with lowered tan delta properties. Such modified elastomers are useful in making tread portions of pneumatic tires.

The invention relates to a process for producing substantially gel-free copolymers of butadiene and isobutylene having number average molecular weights of from about 50,000 to about 200,000 and levels of unsaturation of from about 3 weight percent to about 25 weight percent. The process which is homogeneous in nature involves polymerizing the monomers in an aliphatic solvent or mixture of such solvents in the presence of a BF.sub.3 /ROH catalyst system at a temperature of below -95.degree. A novel method of preparing carboxyl-terminated polymers. A monomer is mixed with an organolithium initiator in a hydrocarbon solvent so as to anionically polymerize linear living polymer lithium chains. A trialkyl aluminum compound is also mixed so as to form polymer lithium aluminate complexes in equilibrium with the linear living polymer lithium chains. When a cyclic anhydride terminator is mixed, the cyclic anhydride terminator preferentially reacts with the C—Li center on a living polymer lithium chain rather than with the C—Al—Li center on a polymer lithium: aluminate complex.
