Abstract:
A moving decoy that better captures the natural movements of a goose or similar game bird in critical aspects, most notably, the characteristic, highly flexible goose neck and the wagging of the tail is provided. The invention provides an improved set of neck vertebrae for use in this application and may operate as integrated into the rest of the decoy or as a modular neck modular neck may be attached to a variety of different decoys. Actuation of the neck may be provided by self-contained electrical motor and power unit in the latter case. In an alternative embodiment remote access of the neck may be provided by cables run between the decoy and a remote location.
Abstract:
A field emission transistor uses carbon nanotubes positioned to extend along a substrate plane rather than perpendicularly thereto. The carbon nanotubes may be pre-manufactured and applied to the substrate and then may be etched to create a gap between the carbon nanotubes and an anode through which electrons may flow by field emission. A planar gate may be positioned beneath the gap to provide a triode structure.
Abstract:
A device for demonstrating the interaction of conservation of energy and conservation of momentum provides a set of balls each supported as a pendulum and in stationary contact, the balls having different weights to illustrate the concept of mechanical impedance.
Abstract:
A lift system includes a block and tackle pulley system movable along a track and carrying first and second hooks at a common attachment axis. The first hook is attached at a front end of the saddle while the second hook is attached to the back end of the saddle. Once the saddle is lowered onto the horse the inward tension of the hooks caused by the weight of the saddle is released allowing the hooks to be removed from the saddle without human intervention. The lift system accommodates a range of saddle sizes and weights.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a metering nozzle used with a squeezable bottle for dispensing a fixed amount of fluid from the bottle. A dispensing chamber volume of the metering nozzle may be adjusted to adjust the volume of fluid dispensed from the bottle. The nozzle allows the fixed amount of fluid to be measured and then dispensed without returning into the bottle by utilizing a movable piston, shuttling between the nozzle inlet and the nozzle outlet by applying a compression force to the bottle against a biasing force of a spring.
Abstract:
Methods of isoprenoid production are provided by the present invention. In particular, transgenic Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 cyanobacteria and methods for producing isoprene and pinene using a host transgenic Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 cyanobacterium are provided.
Abstract:
The present invention is a process and apparatus for forming various bio-products from cellulosic plant material. The plant material is subjected to a pulping step in which lignin is extracted from the material by an aqueous lignin solvent to form a lignin-solvent mixture and purified cellulose. The lignin-solvent mixture can be separated from the water to form a high energy density fuel that can be used independently or combined with biodiesel. The purified cellulose can be used in conventional processes, e.g., paper making, or can be converted to fermentable sugars with a cellulase enzyme to produce other bio-products depending on the operating conditions of the fermenter. The bio-products produced by the fermenter can include the solvent that may be recycled for use in extracting the lignin.

Abstract:
An apparatus for and method of conducting a nerve conduction study is provided. In response to predetermined stimulation from an excitation device, a signal is generated that travels through a human body. The apparatus includes a sensing electrode operatively engagable with the human body downstream of the excitation device for sensing the signal. The apparatus further includes a pressure mounting structure operatively connected to the sensing electrode for controlling the pressure at which the sensing electrode engages the body. The pressure mounting structure includes a pressure source and a pressure sensor. A controller receives a pressure signal from the pressure sensor and the signal from the sensor electrode. The controller includes software to normalize the amplitude of the signal based on the pressure at which the sensing electrode engages the body.
