A dental handpiece has a head section, a neck section, a grip section connected to the grip section, and a drive unit connected to the grip section. The handpiece also has a detent unit for preventing relative rotation between the neck and grip sections. The detent unit includes a detent pin arranged axially slidably in the grip section, a spring for biasing the pin proximally so that the distal end of the pin is arranged inside the grip section in a rest position, and a catch formed at the proximal end of the neck section for receiving the pin for engagement. When the drive unit is brought into connection to the grip section, the pin is pressed distally to project out of the grip section into engagement in the catch, to thereby prevent relative rotation between the neck section and the grip section.

The ejection chamber includes an inlet that communicates with a rear area of the handpiece and an outlet that communicates with the external environment, the ring having a first diameter at the outlet of the ejection chamber and a second diameter at the inlet of the ejection chamber, the first diameter of the ring being larger than the second diameter of the ring.

The enhanced sealing includes tandem seals on stepped diameters to provide additional flow pathway impediments. The tandem seals preferably include spring seals that are positioned in opposite directions to provide enhanced sealing against pressures in two different directions that occur during the pressurization and vacuum cycles of an autoclaving process. Additional enhancements include the use of annular sealing rings with x-shaped cross sections.

Importantly, the device utilizes the boundary layer effect to transfer energy from the fluid flow to rotation of the bur. As a result, the device is operated without creating high decibel noise. Structurally, the device includes a housing defining a chamber, and a hub mounted for rotation in the chamber. When engaged with the hub, the bur passes through a distal aperture in the housing. The housing is further provided with a port for introducing a fluid into the chamber substantially tangential to the axis. Also, the device includes disks connected to the hub and substantially perpendicular to the axis. Operationally, boundary layer effect forces between the fluid flow and the disks cause the hub and the bur to rotate about the axis.

The head part has a sleeve of a configuration to telescopically cover the second housing member and the majority of first housing member while the members are held in one of the first and second positions so that by changing the head part to provide another head part having a sleeve with a different configuration, the handpiece is converted between an angled handpiece and a straight handpiece.
