Silacyclopentenes of the formula and wherein R represents H or C 1-6 alkyl, R 1 represents methyl, alkoxy, fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine, X represents alkoxy, fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine, and y is 0, 1 or 2, are prepared by reacting a disilane of the formula R 1 6-n Si 2 X n , in which n is from 1 to 6 inclusive, with a butadiene of the formula H 2 C=CRCR=CH 2 , at a temperature ranging from 50‹ to 600‹ C. Products of the formula (wherein X represents a halogen atom) may be subsequently hydrolysed to give disiloxanes of the formula The latter may be further copolymerized with siloxanes introducing units of the formula R 111 n SiO 4-n/2 , in which R 111 is a hydrocarbon radical or halohydrocarbon radical, and n is 0 to 3. In an example a disiloxane of the formula is copolymerized at 150‹ C. with a mixture of cyclic dimethylpolysiloxanes in the presence of potassium hydroxide.
