Provided herein are compositions of matter useful in de-inking secondary fibers. A composition according to the invention includes an aqueous solution of an anionic form of a styrene-methacrylic acid copolymer. When a surfactant is used in combination with the copolymers herein described in a de-inking operation, a synergy is observed in that the combination of copolymer and surfactant combination together yield a recycled fiber product having higher brightness level and a lower effective residual ink concentration than recycled fibers produced using either the copolymer or surfactant alone in the same operation.

The removal of inks from a pulp fiber slurry is accomplished by use of a combination of (1) a polyester obtained through reaction between di and/or tricarboxylic acids and/or anhydrides thereof and a polyalkylene glycol or one or more alkylene oxides, (2) a first deinking agent which is an alkoxylated hydrophobic base, e.g. an alcohol, amine, acid, dimer acid, salts thereof, or the like, and (3) a second deinking agent which is a second alkoxylated hydrophobic base having a cloud point about 2 to 20null lower than the cloud point of the first deinking agent. Use of the three component combination allows an improved foam profile allowing longer continuous operation or one or more of a reduction in total chemical demand, optical bleach demand, and stickies.

A deinking method comprising the steps of liberating ink from waste paper as a raw material and removing the liberated ink from a flotation system, wherein a nonionic surfactant, e.g., a reaction product obtained by adding an alkylene oxide to a mixture of an oil & fat and an alcohol, an alkylene oxide adduct of a fatty acid, or an alkylene oxide adduct of a higher alcohol, is used for the liberation of ink, and the flotation step is effected in the presence of a cationic compound, an amine, an acid salt of an amine or an amphoteric compound at a pH of from 4 to 9, provides a high quality deinked pulp having a high whiteness and a little residual ink spots.

The froth moderating agent is selected from the group consisting of:(a) nonionic surfactant material represented by the formula:R--C.sub.6 H.sub.4 O--(C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O).sub.m --(C.sub.3 H.sub.6 O).sub.n --(C.sub.4 H.sub.8 O).sub.p --R.sup.1 wherein R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing from about 5 to 20 carbon atoms, R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of chloro, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkoxy and phenoxy, m, n, and p are each a number of between 0 and about 50, and the sum of m, n, and p is between about 1 and 50;(b) fatty acid esters of sorbitan;(c) certain alkoxylated fatty acid esters of sorbitan;(d) polypropylene glycol being at least 50 weight percent soluble in water; and(e) a combination of at least two of the materials selected from the group consisting of (a), (b), (c) and (d).Also described is the use of a froth controlling amount of nonionic surfactant material (a) alone or in combination with flotation deinking chemicals or other froth moderating agents in reducing the amount of stickies and enhancing the removal of electrostatic inks in the flotation deinking process.

Quaternary ammonium compositions are described which are made using diluents including soya bean oil, caster oil, mineral oils, isoparaffin/naphthenic and coconut oil. Such diluents remain as diluents in the final product and generally have a vapor pressure of 1 mm of Hg or less at 25.degree. C., and are liquid at ambient temperature. The quaternary/ammonium diluent compositions have low volatile organic compound emission rates and high flash points, and can be tailored to particular applications. Such applications include use a fabric softeners, cosmetics ingredients, deinking additives, surfactants, and reaction materials in the manufacture of organoclays.

A process for removing water borne flexographic inks from paper stock comprising the steps of (a) forming a slurry by pulping paper containing water borne flexographic inks in an aqueous medium having a pH of greater than 8 which includes: (1) one or more basic agents; (2) one or more nonionic surfactants; (3) one or more anionic polyelectrolytes; and (4) an amount of paper different from that being processed which contains inorganic fillers, coatings or mixtures thereof; and (b) subjecting the slurry produced in step (a) to a flotation cell having an aqueous medium having a pH of greater than 8 which includes: (1) one or more basic agents; (2) one or more nonionic surfactants; and (3) one or more anionic polyelectrolytes is provided.
