A device for enabling a local area network wiring structure to simultaneously carry digital data and analog telephone signals on the same transmission medium. It is particularly applicable to a network in star topology, in which remote data units (e.g. personal computers) are each connected to a hub through a cable comprising at least two pairs of conductors, providing a data communication path in each direction. Modules at each end of the cable provide a phantom path for telephony (voice band), signals between a telephone near the data set and a PBX, through both conductor pairs in a phantom circuit arrangement. All such communication paths function simultaneously and without mutual interference. The modules comprise simple and inexpensive passive circuit components.

A method and apparatus for efficient data transmission in a wireless voice-over-data communication system. In a transmitter, data segments are transmitted in accordance with a predefined data protocol. The predefined data protocol is modified to define a first segment size and a second segment size. The first segment size represents a minimum segment size that can be transmitted. The second segment size represents a maximum segment size that can be transmitted. A segment is created and transmitted whenever a quantity of time-sensitive information available for transmission allows a segment to be constructed having a segment size between the minimum segment size and the maximum segment size. A segment of any size up to the maximum segment size is also created and transmitted whenever any time-sensitive information is available for transmission and an acknowledgement message is received by the transmitter.

The present invention provides a communication system for integrating audio and visual messaging. The communication system includes a mobile communication device for receiving visual messages and for transmitting voice messages to a recipient, a base station system in communication with the mobile communication device, an electronic mail gateway for delivering visual messages to the base station system for transmission to the mobile communication device, and an integrated mail gateway for receiving from the base station a voice message and addressing information that were both transmitted from the mobile communication device. The integrated mail gateway is programmed to create an e-mail message comprising the voice message. The integrated mail gateway is also programmed to use the addressing information to address the e-mail message, and to send the addressed e-mail message to the recipient.

A method and apparatus for providing an interworking unit between ATM networks and IP networks. A gateway unit is provided that will interconnect a ATM (AAL2) based access/core network to an IP based (Mux in RTP). The gateway unit acts as an interface which is disposed between a first and second network, wherein the first network uses a first type of signaling and the second network uses a second type of signaling, and the interface translates signaling between the first and second networks. The interface further includes a control plane for translating signaling between the first and second network and/or a user plane for converting user data from the first type of signaling to the second type of signaling. The control plane maps services between the first and second networks and transfers the services between the first and second networks. The interface also includes at least one interface module and multiplexing module. The interface module includes a first type of interface module for providing connectivity to the first network and a second type of interface module for providing connectivity to the second network. The multiplexing modules includes a first type of multiplexing module for providing multiplexing and demultiplexing packets for the first type of signaling and a second type of multiplexing module for multiplexing and demultiplexing packets for the second type of signaling.

The interface of the common controller (CDCC) towards the second telecommunications system (WAN) is independent of its interface towards the first telecommunications system (NSS). In particular, embodiments of the disclosure described determining a first portion of a signal having a first frequency band, the first frequency band being greater than approximately 1.2 GHz; determining a second portion of the signal having a second frequency band, the second frequency band being less than or equal to approximately 1.2 GHz; applying an attenuation to the first portion of the signal; and transmitting the second portion of the signal at a flat power-spectral density.
