    摘要: A method of operating an orbital saw to transversely sever superposed elongated web plies into shorter length products which includes advancing along a linear path superposed elongated web plies having a cross sectional area of at least about 3.5 square inches (2200 mm.sup.2), providing a 4-bar linkage including first and second bars extending generally parallel to each other and third and fourth bars connecting the first and second bar means adjacent the ends thereof, further providing a disc blade rotatably mounted on each of the third and fourth bars, rotating the first bar about a first axis to orbit the blades with the blade orbit intersecting the linear path with the centers of said disc blades being at least 30 inches (750 mm) apart while skewing the first axis at a minor acute angle to the linear path, connecting the first and the second bar with the third and fourth bar to provide at least one degree of pivotal freedom of the third and fourth bars relative to the first and second bars, and rotating the second bar about a second axis different from the first axis to compensate for the skewing and to orient the disc blades perpendicular to the web plies in the linear path when severing the web plies.

    摘要: The cutting mechanism includes a cutter block mounting a knife blade arranged for movement along a slot in a cutting table. The cutter block is driven by a cable and a first drive pulley. The cable extends under and around the first drive pulley and a second pulley, with the first end of the cable fixed to a second end of the cutter block, and the second end of the cable fixed to a first end of the cutter block. The cable and the first and second pulleys are arranged such that when the cutter block lies between the first end of the slot in the table and a center of first drive pulley the first and second ends of the cable are drawn taut thereby stopping movement of the cutter block along the slot towards the first end, and such that when the cutter block lies between the second end of the slot in the table and a center of the second pulley the first and second ends of the cable are likewise drawn taut stopping movement of the cutter block along the slot towards the second end. The cutting mechanism also includes a slot and receptacle arranged to mount the knife blade on the cutter block such that the knife blade can easily be arranged within, and removed from the slot and the receptacle. The cutter block also includes a knife blade securing means positionable between a first position which secures the knife blade in the slot, and a second position allowing for removal of the knife blade. Notches are provided at the top end of the slot which allow for easy grasping of the knife blade when removing the knife blade from the slot and allow for easy insertion of the knife blade into the slot. The notches are sized such that the finger and thumb of a person can easily grasp the second end of the knife blade.

    摘要: A method of operating an orbital saw for transversely severing elongated, superposed, multi-ply web material which includes advancing the web material along a path into a cutting station having a skew arm adjacent said path, rotating said arm about an axis skewed with respect to the path, the skew arm having a disc blade coupling means, such as a 4-bar linkage, mounted thereon and carrying a rotating disc blade with the blade axis spaced from the arm axis to cause the blade to intersect the path and cut the web material during the blade orbit, maintaining the blade axis at an angle skewed relative to the arm axis to position the disc blade continually perpendicular to the path whereby the disc blade makes a square cut through the web material, providing the coupling means with a grinding stone for the blade and a control for contacting the grinding stone and blade, and positioning the grinding stone radially inwardly throughout the entirety of the blade orbit whereby centrifugal forces are reduced and cyclic loading is substantially eliminated.

    摘要: The invention is a sharpener for a knife of a food slicer. The sharpener includes a base assembly and a sharpener assembly. The base assembly includes a lever mounted thereto on a pivot; the lever carrying a cam member which extends therefrom. The sharpener assembly includes a housing and a longitudinal cavity, a sharpening wheel mounted for rotation on an axle which reciprocates lengthwise in the cavity, a compression spring positioned in the cavity at the base of the axle, and an actuator which reciprocates in the cavity portion on the side of the spring opposite the axle. Upon moving the lever about its pivot, the cam contacts the actuator and moves the actuator in the direction of the axle and compresses the spring. The spring moves the plunger lengthwise within the cavity and urges the sharpening wheel against the knife.

The grinding wheel is driven by a motor around a vertical axis to grind the cutting surfaces of the cutting blades and produce precision ground surfaces on the blades which are aligned in a common plane.

    摘要: A sharpening apparatus for sharpening scalloped-edged blades in a carton slitting machine includes at least two rotating cylindrical hones mounted on a pneumatically controlled actuator. A sharpening operation is initiated by a machine operator as needed to maintain blade sharpness, and is performed automatically by the apparatus controls. The actuator positions the rotating hones in contact with opposing sides of a cutting edge of the slitting blade as the blade moves past the hones at reduced speed. A first hone is rotated in a direction opposite to the direction of the blade and a second hone is rotated in the same direction of the blade. During sharpening, the hones execute several reciprocating axial movements to stroke the blade.
