Abstract: A combined sheet material including at least two absorbent sheets, such as of cellulose-cotton, each having a density of between from 10 to 40 g/m.sup.2. Each of the sheets is separately embossed by calendaring them into a pattern of protuberances distributed in a first pitch along a first direction for each sheet (P.sub.1 sm, P.sub.2 sm) and in a second pitch in a second direction for each sheet (P.sub.1 st, P.sub.2 st) which subtends the first direction at an angle other than zero. The end of the protuberances extending away from the plane of each of the sheets includes a flat bonding element whereby the two sheets are bonded to each other, preferably by gluing. The pattern of each of the sheets is characterized in that the first pitch of each sheet along the first direction is different and related by the equation..vertline.1/P.sub.1 sm-1/P.sub.2 sm.vertline..gtoreq.1/L1wherein L1 is a predetermined value corresponding to the dimension of a segment within the combined sheet material in which at least one spot capable of bonding the two sheets together is present regardless of the relative position of the two patterns.

Abstract: An emboss roll according to the present invention is capable of assuredly performing an embossing work without any risk of shaving a surface of nonwoven fabrics and forming pin holes when used to emboss nonwoven fabrics for the purpose of prevention of filament shavings to be adhered to products. This emboss roll having an outer surface thereof provided with embossing projections wherein all of the top end corners thereof are cut so as to be a surface. As a result of cutting the top end corners of the embossing projections, nonwoven fabrics can be protected from being cut by the corner portions or forming pin holes during the embossing work.

Abstract: Sanitary tissue products which are laminates formed from two dissimilar paper webs. When a web of low density, high bulk process paper is united with a web of conventional paper, a product possessing absorbency softness, flexibility, and bulk properties similar to those of a product comprising two webs of the low density, high bulk process paper is produced. Variations taught by the invention include the use of two paper webs having different creping characteristics to form the laminated sanitary tissue. The teachings of the invention can be extended to other products such as paper towels.

Abstract: Uniform embossing on both sides of a web of paper may be obtained in a single pass through an embossing nip by interposing a thin film of tough, resilient material in the form of a continuous belt of approximately 0.050 inch thickness or less between the embossing roll and the backup roll. Stationary guide members, which may be combined with air bearings, are provided to insure proper tracking of the belt.

Abstract: A system for treating paper webs and the like including a platen roller and a plurality of support rollers angularly spaced thereabout. At least one of the support rollers is an embossing roller cooperative with the platen roller to emboss a web advanced between the facing juxtaposed surfaces of the platen and embossing rollers. The platen roller is floatingly confined by the support rollers and has no rigidly fixed axis of rotation. Such platen roller is also hollow, including a cylindrical wall component defining a gaseous fluid pressurized chamber. The cylindrical wall component of the roller is of resilient construction and is inwardly depressible by the support rollers against the force of the gaseous pressure fluid acting outwardly thereagainst within the pressurized chamber. The web material to be treated is passed through the nips defined by one or more support rollers, including at least one embossment roller, and the platen roller. While passing through and between said nips the web material is continuously supported over substantially the entire surface area along one side thereof without application thereto of tensile stress of a magnitude tending to tear the same. Besides treating the web material to provide an embossed appearance thereto the system otherwise treats it to provide for increased absorbency, softness and apparent bulk.

Abstract: The method of making a non-woven fibrous pad comprising a threedimensional network of individual fibers interconnected by bonding means where they cross and contact each other and having a surface textured with a pattern of undulating elevations separated by a respective pattern of undulating depressions wherein each of the elevations comprises a structural dome in which the ratio of cap wall unit weight to average web unit weight is less than 1.0. The method includes the step of subjecting an unbonded web of mechanically engaged fibers to successive forming operations between partly meshing, multiple cogged work members relocating fibers from the regions forming the peaks of the elevations to the regions forming the sidewalls thereof. Apparatus for producing such a fibrous pad comprises a pair of fiber orienting arrangements, one of which includes means forming a traveling cog surface and the other of which includes a plurality of synchronized cog members meshing successively with the cog surface. One of the fiber orienting arrangements includes a plurality of closely laterally spaced cog elements having channels therebetween aligned generally with the direction of travel of the cog surface, and a conveyor belt arrangement is disposed partly in the channels and diverges from a meshed region of the fiber orienting arrangements for feeding a fibrous web into the orienting arrangements or stripping a processed web therefrom.
