    Abstract: Fan blade platform includes axially extending I beam supporting radially outer skin having flowpath surface. I beam includes upper and lower or radially outer and inner I flanges on radially outer and inner beam ends of axially extending I web. Radially outer skin on top of and bonded or otherwise attached to radially outer I flange. I beam may be integral and monolithic and made from a non-metallic composite or thermoplastic material and have post cure formed weight relief holes. I beam may include oppositely facing or back to back first and second C beams. First C beam including axially extending first C web disposed between radially outer and inner first C flanges. Second C beam including axially extending second C web disposed between upper and lower or radially outer and inner second C flanges. I beam may be asymmetrical about center plane of I web.

    Abstract: A gas turbine engine composite disk includes dovetail slots between disk posts extending radially inwardly from a periphery, a hub ring of composite plies circumscribed about a centerline axis, and radial plies extending radially away from hub ring into disk posts. A segmented intermediate ring concentric with and located radially outwardly of hub ring includes intermediate ring segments having nested plies with annular bases circumscribed about centerline axis and substantially radially extending clockwise and counter-clockwise radial ply arms. An outer segmented ring may be concentric with and located radially outwardly of intermediate ring, include annular outer ring segments with circumferentially stacked composite plies disposed within intermediate ring segments between clockwise and counter-clockwise radial ply arms and radially outwardly of annular bases. An outer skin of outermost composite covering plies may extend circumferentially around composite disk. Circumferential and radial composite plies may include circumferentially and radially oriented fibers.

    Abstract: A fiber placement system is provided that can include a compaction roller defining a plurality of openings between a roller outer surface and a roller inner surface. The plurality of openings are in fluid communication with a vacuum source. A cover can be included in or on the compaction roller so as to block airflow through a portion of the openings. The fiber placement system can also include a head including a frame and at least one supply spool mounted on the frame. The supply spool is supported on a hub for rotation, and the compaction roller is aligned to receive one or more fiber tows from the at least one supply spool. Methods are also provided for laying a prepreg tow material using automated fiber placement.

    Abstract: A composite blade includes a composite airfoil section having airfoil pressure and suction sides extending chordwise between airfoil leading and trailing edges, a dovetail root attached to airfoil section and a blade shank therebetween, and a metallic leading edge shield covering an axially extending portion of airfoil section including at least a portion of airfoil leading edge and a radially and chordwise extending portion of a leading edge portion of the blade shank. Leading edge portion may be cut back from airfoil leading edge and a shank leading edge aft or downstream of airfoil leading edge. A nose may extend along a shield leading edge of the metallic leading edge shield with pressure and suction side legs extending aftwardly from nose along airfoil pressure and suction sides. Light weight insert may be located between nose and airfoil leading edges.

    Abstract: A propeller assembly includes a central hub including a first forward-facing end, a second aft-facing end, a hub body extending therebetween, and a plurality of channels spaced circumferentially around the central hub. The propeller assembly further includes blade wedges configured to be inserted into and to retain blades within the channels of the central hub. Each blade includes a blade dovetail including a dovetail face configured to engage a respective channel sidewall and/or a respective wedge sidewall. The dovetail face includes a bearing portion that engages the respective channel sidewall and/or the respective wedge sidewall and a clearance portion that is spaced from the respective channel sidewall and/or the respective wedge sidewall by a clearance gap during a first loading of the propeller assembly and that engages the respective channel sidewall or wedge sidewall during a second loading, the second loading greater than the first loading.

    Abstract: An apparatus for forming a flange on a component is presented. The apparatus includes a mold disposed for the placement of the component thereon, a forming tool, and a tubular bladder. The forming tool is assembled to hold the component with a first portion extending into a space defined between the mold and the forming tool. The tubular bladder has a non-uniform wall thickness around its cross section along a longitudinal dimension of the bladder. The bladder is disposed in a step defined in the mold, and configured to impart a forming force to the portion extending into the space to form the flange on the component when the bladder is inflated. A method for forming the flange on the component is also provided.
