Abstract: A fall brake for material in which a plurality of frames are suspended one beneath the other, each frame holding a material guide. The frames are pivotally interconnected in staggered positions and the lowermost frame is suspended to a lifting mechanism through a flexible member. In order to prevent the risk of damage in the case of shocks and to provide a small height of the fall brake in the lifted position, the lowermost frame can be upwardly pivoted from its operative position into an inoperative position, in which the frame is mainly parallel to the overlying frame, each frame having suspended to it a material guide being at an angle to said frame.

Abstract: A conveyor having a single row of receptacles to seat individual fruit of a corresponding row of citrus fruit moves the fruit in succession past a station where it is required that the major axis of each fruit, i.e., the axis through the stem and blossom ends of the fruit be parallel to the direction of travel of the fruit. In each receptacle the individual fruit rests on a pair of parallel power-actuated spool-shaped rollers the axes of which are parallel to the direction of travel of the receptacles, which rollers spin the fruit to cause the major axes of the fruit to be oriented parallel to the direction of travel. Abstract: A conveyor having an endless series of holders equipped with cushions to carry fragile objects has an upper run extending from a receiving station to a discharge station and a lower return run with an upward arcuate return path from the lower run to the start of the upper run. The holders are turned upside down on the lower run of the conveyor and are subject to centrifugal force on the upward arcuate return path. The cushions are envelopes of flexible sheet material containing masses of pellets. A free-falling object lands on a cushion at the receiving station of the conveyor and is decelerated without harm by forming a seating recess in the mass of pellets. The return journey of the cushions redistributes the pellets to eliminate the seating recesses and thus enables newly received objects at the receiving station to be decelerated by forming new seating recesses.

Abstract: A singulator for rollable and slidable articles of compact configuration, such as fruit, has a frame supporting a feeding tray to present the articles at a datum region. One or more conveyors on the frame are available at the datum region. Each conveyor extends substantially horizontally from the datum region in a line and has a number of top surface areas spaced apart along the line. A number of eccentrics on a shaft parallel to the line are arranged in a predetermined polar relationship to move the surface areas up and down in timed relationship as the shaft revolves to approximate waves traveling along the line preferably at increased wave length away from the datum point and with a phase difference between two side-by-side conveyors.

Abstract: Round articles are rolled in stages by a series of conveyor units arranged edge to edge that rock about axes perpendicular to the direction of travel. The conveyor units are rocked synchronously between rearward and forward positions and the conveyor units are formed with seats adjacent their back edges to receive new articles on each cycle. A given round article that rolls onto the seat of a conveyor unit when the unit is in its rearward position rolls forward on the unit as the unit rocks to its forward position. Then as the unit rocks back to its rearward article-receiving position, the given article is boosted onto the seat of the next forward conveyor unit. Thus, normally all of the articles on the conveyor advance by one conveyor unit on each cycle.

Abstract: A plurality of stacked magnetic cores have a pair of wires threaded through axially aligned openings of the cores. The free ends of the wires are secured to a comb-like, plastic support stick which is formed with a plurality of nests for receiving and supporting individual cores. The cores are fed successively into the nests of the support stick. As the stick is rocked about its longitudinal axis and also indexed longitudinally, the wires are fed through and between successive slots in the stick adjacent to the nests so that each core is supported on the stick and wired thereby. Abstract: A flexible conveyor tube has intermediate points interconnected by tension springs which draw the points together and configure the tube into a plurality of consecutive loops. One end of the tube has a gathering funnel and the other end is provided with a closure and a pull line. The springs vary in strength from strongest at the closure to least strong at the funnel. The funnel is adapted to be connected to a date tree disposed about a bunch of dates, with the looped tube suspended in depending relation. Dates gravitate into and are held in the uppermost loop. A pull on the line elongates the uppermost spring and varies the configuration of the uppermost loop so that the dates gravitate therefrom into the next loop. Additional pull varies the configuration of the consecutive loops sequentially and controls the speed of gravitational movement of the dates. After the dates are in the lowermost loop, the closure is opened to discharge the dates into a container. A plurality of gathering funnels can be connected to the upper end of the tube for harvesting the pickings of several pickers.

Abstract: A fruit feed system comprising a bulk supply conveyor for rollable fruit articles from which fruit is fed through a discharge opening past a bridge preventing means into an inclined hopper or tray. A row of fruit is elevated from this tray and presented to a selective fruit admitting and rejecting mechanism comprising wobble plates which reject any fruit in the row presented to it which is not properly aligned with one of the passages through the wobble plate system, and admits only one fruit between each pair of wobble plates for feeding thereby on demand to the feed end of one of a plurality of single-file fruit feed mechanisms which incorporate means for feeding one fruit at a time from the discharge end thereof to a suitable processing mechanism such as a grader, a pitter or the like. Means is provided for selectively blocking any one of the single-file feed mechanisms, and when this occurs, the fruit is maintained in the row in an agitated condition, and the fruit between the wobble plates remain in place in agitated condition, ready to feed on demand. Subsequent fruit is presented repeatedly to the wobble plates for admission but no feed occurs when no fruit is in demand. The system includes means for determining the beginning of operation of the wobble plates, and optionally selecting the amount of ''''wobble'''' provided by oscillation of the wobble control means.
