Abstract: A gas-oil pressure accumulator having a load-bearing structure of composite material, suitable for aircraft hydraulic circuits. The accumulator is formed of a cylindrical body with closed ends, at least one of which is composed of a convex cap. A piston slideable in the cylindrical body defines two chambers, one adapted for containing hydraulic oil and the other adapted for containing gas under pressure. The walls subjected to internal pressure are formed with an internal core of metallic material of small thickness, and are provided with a facing of composite material, composed of high-strength fibres impregnated with synthetic resin, adapted for resisting the loads due to the pressure, which facing of composite material extends at least over one of the end caps of the cylindrical body, the winding of the fibers being continuous and without the superposition of consecutive turns in any one layer of turns, with winding angles differing from the angles corresponding to the equilibrium path of the stresses on the surface of the cylindrical body itself.

Abstract: The pressure vessel comprises an accumulator (10) having a piston (16) disposed in a bore (14). The piston (16) has gas under pressure on one side thereof maintained within the bore (14) by means of a multiple seal in an opening (26) having first (28), second (32), and third diameter (36) sections. The multiple seal includes a fill screw (40) threadedly engaging the second diameter section (32) of the opening (26), the fill screw (40) having a conical surface (46) sealingly engaging a seat (31) between the first diameter (28) and second diameter (32) sections of the opening. A cap screw (70) is threadedly received within the third diameter section (36) and compresses an O-ring (60) between the cap screw (70) and housing (12). The cap screw (70) has an annular rib (77) which bites into a shoulder (34) of the body (12) to provide an additional seal for maintaining the gas under pressure within the bore (14).

Abstract: A liquid spring accumulator includes a housing having inlet and outlet ports connected to a source of liquid under pressure. The housing contains a high pressure chamber and a cylindrical chamber containing a spring-loaded piston. A rod attached to the piston is movable therewith into the high pressure chamber. A passageway through the axis of the piston and rod provides communication between the inlet port and the high pressure chamber and includes a valve seat. A check valve member in the passageway includes a shaft holding the movable member off its seat during initial flow of hydraulic liquid into cylinder, permitting flow to fill the high pressure chamber. As the liquid pressure increases, the initial movement of the piston permits the check valve to close, and still further increases in pressure cause the piston to force the rod into the high pressure chamber, substantially increasing its hydraulic pressure.

Abstract: A vessel includes a body having a chamber normally containing pressurized gas and enclosed by a removable closure provided with a gas charging valve. Inadvertent disassembly of the closure when the chamber contains pressurized gas is precluded by a planar cover plate captively retained by the charging valve and normally masking tool-receiving members on the closure. Removal of the valve/cover plate unit initially releases a resilient seal carried by the inner face of the valve juxtaposed the outer face of the closure and subsequently progressively exposes to the atmosphere a gas bleeding passage formed in the attachment stem of the valve to gradually release all pressurized gas from the vessel chamber. The closure is only accessible for disassembly following complete removal of the unitary valve and cover plate after which all gas under pressure in the chamber has been relieved.

Abstract: This invention relates to a hydropneumatic accumulator comprising a piston and cylinder arrangement defining in the cylinder a first compartment in which is provided a gas which is under pressure and which has a density less than that of nitrogen and a second compartment in which liquid is provided. Helium is the gas preferably used, such that, on the one hand, a much larger volume of the liquid can be stored in the accumulator at a predetermined pressure than is possible using nitrogen, and, on the other hand, the variations in pressure due to variations in temperature is much less than with nitrogen. Abstract: A hydraulic accumulator cylinder encloses an elastically compressible and expansible gas cushion separated from the hydraulic fluid by a floating piston having sealing and guiding rings. The cylinder has one end wall formed with a substantially central hydraulic fluid inlet and outlet opening, the inner surface of this one end wall defining a bowl shape concavity. An additional ring on the piston constitutes a dirt stripper, and the face of the piston toward the one cylinder end wall is formed with a frustoconical protrusion which, when the maximum amount of fluid has been withdrawn from the cylinder, enters the opening. The piston is formed with an annular bearing surface around the protrusion and engageable with a stationary sealing ring on a countersurface in the concavity, the sealing ring acting as a seal only when the piston is pressed against the countersurface by the gas pressure. In this position of the piston, the piston and the one cylinder end wall define an annular chamber in which there remains a residual amount of fluid serving as a liquid barrier against the gas enclosed in the cylinder.
