Abstract: The instant invention relates to a bobbin alignment mechanism for use with bobbin handling equipment such as a bobbin winding machine. The alignment mechanism includes a plurality of alignment gates situated within the guideways of, say, a bobbin magazine to sequentially align the bobbin in the correct attitude within the magazine. The plurality of gates are sequentially movable from a bobbin holding position. Release of a downstream gate is actuated by movement of an upstream gate to its bobbin holding position under the weight of a bobbin supplied by a distribution chute above the upstream gate. Means are included on the distribution chute to release a holding catch engaging the upstream gate to release said upstream gate to its released position and thereby release of a bobbin to the downstream gate as the distribution chute is pivoted across the cells of said magazine.

Abstract: A rotary chuck of a winder receives a core on which a body of yarn is wound to form a package. Upon commencing winding of the yarn it is grasped by a clamp recessed into a free end head of the rotating chuck. Immediately after the yarn has been received by the clamp it retracts a cutter guard and the strand is severed outwardly of the clamp. The yarn is wound into a spiral groove in the head to provide a tailing end of yarn of predetermined length. At a predetermined and adjustable position of the yarn in the groove the yarn is released by an adjustable yarn guide cam and is received by a yarn traversing guide which then moves the yarn to and fro axially of the core during winding of the package. When the package is full the chuck and the yarn clamp are concurrently released, and the package is telescoped off of the chuck head as the tailing end is drawn out of the spiral groove and through the core where it remains until needed.

Abstract: An automatic spinning system has at least one spinning frame with opposite banks of spinning stations. A tractor carries a tender capable of randomly servicing the spinning stations. The tractor is mounted for back and forth movement between opposite ends of a track above the banks of spinning stations. The tender is mounted on the tractor for swinging movement about the ends of the spinning frame from one of the banks of spinning stations to the other bank when the tractor is at either of the opposite ends of its track. Thus, the tender patrols the stations as it travels in one direction along a continuous path about the banks of spinning stations, and is capable of randomly servicing the spinning stations. Either a broken strand of yarn or a full bobbin at a station requiring servicing is sensed by operating mechanism for stopping the tender in servicing orientation with the station requiring servicing, whereupon the tender doffs the bobbin from the station spindle and donns an empty bobbin and starts the strand winding onto the empty bobbin. Empty bobbins are conveyed to the tender and filled bobbins are conveyed from the tender as they are doffed. If desired, the tender may be equipped with a system for ridding the spinning frame of lint.

Abstract: A winding machine, such as a UNIFIL loom winder, manufactured by Leesona Corporation, Warwick Rhode Island 02887, has a spindle assembly for receiving and rotating a bobbin, and a traversing assembly including a traversing member having a pair of jaws releasably threadedly secured to a traverse rod, during winding, for guiding a strand of yarn being wound onto the bobbin. The traversing and spindle assemblies are driven by mechanism within a casing of the winder. This mechanism includes a continuously driven drive shaft connected by a clutch with a spindle shaft which rotates the bobbin and rotatably receives cams for operating the threaded traverse rod to provide the traversing member with builder and reciprocating motions. When the clutch is drivingly engaged it supports an end of the spindle shaft, and when the clutch is disengaged this end of the spindle shaft is supported on a unit which journals the shaft for axial movement. At the end of winding of a bobbin, bobbin doffing and donning operations are initiated, the clutch between the drive shaft and the spindle shaft is released, the jaws are released from the traverse rod and the traversing member is returned to its starting point, the yarn is cut between the traversing member and the doffed, filled bobbin, and the cut yarn is engaged for winding onto an empty bobbin previously donned into the winder. When the traversing member has been returned to its starting position, the clutch again drivingly engages the drive shaft and spindle shaft whereupon the cycle is repeated.

Abstract: Disclosed is an improved friction twisting element for use in a textile yarn false twist spindle. The disclosed friction twisting element, mounted in a false twist spindle capable of rotation about its longitudinal axis, engages a strand of yarn and imparts a plurality of turns of twist to the yarn for each revolution of the spindle. The size and shape of the friction twist element are such that tension fluctuations in the yarn are minimized during the operation of the device. The size and shape of the friction element will also maximize the frictional engagement between the element and the yarn and will avoid yarn slippage that is characteristic of a friction twisting element that has a large variation between the inside and outside diameter of the yarn engaging surface.

Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for imparting false twist to textile strand wherein a plurality of turns of twist are imparted to the strand for each revolution of a friction twister. The disclosed friction twister comprises a single hollow spindle having a pair of oppositely positioned frictional engagement means therein. The twister also includes reversing guide means which allow the strand to enter in a substantially rectilinear path through one end of the axial bore of the spindle, come into engagement with a first one of the frictional engagement means to twist the yarn, pass through the reverse guide means, thereafter contact the second of the frictional engagement means, and finally exit in a generally rectilinear path through a second end of the axial bore of said spindle. In practice with the present invention a single strand or a plurality of strands can be twisted by the use of a single friction twister spindle and a plurality of turns of twister are inserted in the strand or strands for each single revolution of the twister spindle.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method for handling the unwinding end of a wound body of yarn by releasing the end from adjacent winds of the yarn and, with the bobbin rotating, picking up and carrying the released end in a stream of air flowing into a suction nozzle. Lips of the suction nozzle automatically conform to the configuration of the body of yarn. One of the lips may engage the body to aid in releasing the end from the body and providing an air seal, and the other lip may be spaced from the body, thus providing more effective flow of the stream across the body to pick up the unwinding end. If desired, both lips may be spaced from the body of yarn. The unwinding end from the body of yarn, and a nozzle, as described above, if desired, may be provided for withdrawing the unwinding end.

Abstract: A method for the preparation of an electrocatalyst which comprises (a) electrodepositing less than a complete monomolecular layer of material on a substrate utilizing cathodic polarization of short duration, and (b) oxidizing the electrodeposit and the substrate utilizing anodic polarization, also of short duration is described. The deposited material preferably is a metal or metal oxide having useful catalytic and/or electrical properties, e.g., platinum or gold. The substrate preferably is a metal or metal oxide such as tantalum oxide, tungsten oxide, or a sodium tungsten bronze, NaxWO3. The substrate is treated in an electrolyte containing a very dilute solution of the material to be deposited and/or in the presence of a counterelectrode containing this material. Several repetitions of these method steps, i.e., reversing the polarity such that the deposition and oxidation steps alternate, results in the complete or partial integration of minute portions of electrodeposited material in the substrate material. This method is useful for providing or improving catalytic activity in a substrate. The products produced by the method are useful in electrochemical devices.
