Abstract: A secondary containment system for containing fuel leaks or leaks of other environmentally hazardous fluids includes a containment chamber and a detection system for detecting leaks. The containment system includes a fluid-carrying inner pipe and a containment pipe surrounding the inner pipe with an interstitial space being defined between the two pipes for containment of leaks. The interstitial space is pressurized with an inert fluid at a constant pressure greater than the pressure of the fluid flowing through the inner fluid-carrying pipe. Monitoring of the pressure of the inert fluid in the interstitial space triggers an alarm indicating that a leak has occurred. The location of the leak can be determined by the use of multiple pressure sensors. The containment pipe is reenforced to withstand pressures of at least 75 psi.

The inner pipe has at least one terminal end extending from the outer pipe to leave a portion of the outer wall of the inner pipe exposed to thereby expose the interstitial region. A boot is provided for defining a chamber with a larger end snugly fitting the outer pipe and a small end snugly fitting on the exposed outer wall of the inner pipe. The boot has an access port communicating with the interior of the chamber to provide access to the interstitial region.

Abstract: A self-supporting pipe rupture and whip restraint system (10) for a process fluid pipe (12) of a nuclear reactor steam generator pressure vessel (14) includes a guard pipe (26) concentrically disposed about the process pipe (12) so as to entirely encase the process pipe (12) from the pressure vessel nozzle 18 to a terminal end fitting component (36) disposed exteriorly of the reactor facility building wall (32), the guard pipe (26) being integrally fixed to the process pipe (12) through means of the nozzle (18) and the component (36). Under postulated rupture conditions of the process pipe (12), pipe whipping of the process pipe (12) is restrained by the guard pipe (26), and the process fluid effluent from the process pipe (12) is contained within the guard pipe (26). Leak detection apparatus (50) is operatively associated with the annular space (30) defined between the process pipe (12) and the guard pipe (26) so as to detect ruptures or fractures within either the process pipe (12) or the guard pipe (26). The provision of a 90.degree. elbow bend section (52) within the system also facilitates thermal expansion of the process pipe (12) relative to the guard pipe (26) without requiring conventional expansion joints or expansion bellows.

Abstract: An improved shield for a pipe joint is described that includes an elongated body to be wrapped around a pipe coupling, formed from a strip of pliable fabric. One or more fabric liner strips is disposed within the body, and means are provided for separably connecting its ends together. The liner strips are loosely slidable relative to the body during wrapping of the assembly of the body and liner strips around the pipe coupling. One or more display means for monitoring the coupling integrity are held against the fabric body in assembled relation by a clear envelope means. The display means is formed from a sheet of chemically sensitive material having an indicating means thereon which, upon contact with leakage from the pipe coupling, provides a visual indication of such leakage.

Abstract: An integrity monitoring system for a lined pipeline is provided for monitoring the integrity of a polymer liner in a host pipe. Methods and apparatus are described by which a lined pipeline is provided with such an integrity monitoring system. Sensor cable is able to bridge a joint between sections of lined pipe, for example by routing the sensor cable across the joint via a channel in an electrofusion fitting or by connecting successive lengths of sensor cable via pass-throughs in an electrofusion fitting. Advantageously, the sensor cable is disposed within a continuous annulus between linings and host pipes, and the continuous annulus is maintained across pipe joints using electrofusion fittings.
