    Abstract: A current limiter for selectively limiting a rate of change of current in a DC electrical network may include a first electrical block including an inductive element and a second electrical block including a bidirectional switch. The first electrical block is connected in parallel with the second electrical block between first and second terminals, and the first and second terminals are connectable to the DC electrical network. The bidirectional switch is switchable to: (1) a first mode to permit current flow through the second electrical block in a first current direction and at the same time inhibit current flow through the second electrical block in a second, opposite current direction; and (2) a second mode to permit current flow through the second electrical block in the second current direction and at the same time inhibit current flow through the second electrical block in the first current direction.

    Abstract: A synthetic test circuit, for performing an electrical test on a device under test, is provided. The circuit includes a terminal connectable to the device under test; a voltage injection circuit-operably connected to the terminal, the voltage injection circuit including a voltage source, the voltage source including a chain-link converter, the chain-link converter including a plurality of modules, each module including a plurality of module switches connected with at least one energy storage device; and a controller-configured to operate each module of the voltage injection circuit to selectively bypass the or each corresponding energy storage device and insert the or each corresponding energy storage device into the chain-link converter so as to generate a voltage across the chain-link converter and thereby operate the voltage injection circuit to inject a unidirectional voltage waveform into the device under test.

    Abstract: An alternate arm converter includes at least one converter limb that defines first and second limb portions. Each limb portion includes at least one director switch connected in series with a chain-link converter between one of two DC terminals and an AC terminal of the converter. The chain-link converters are operable to generate a voltage waveform at the AC terminal, and the director switches are operable to switch the respective chain-link converters in and out of circuit between the respective DC terminal and the AC terminal. The converter also includes a controller configured to selectively control the switching of each director switch to form a current circulation path including each limb portion and the DC network. The controller, during formation of the current circulation path, forces an alternating current to flow through the current circulation path to transfer energy between the chain-link converters of the limb portions.

    Abstract: A control system for optimizing a chemical looping (“CL”) plant includes a reduced order mathematical model (“ROM”) that is designed by eliminating mathematical terms that have minimal effect on the outcome. A non-linear optimizer provides various inputs to the ROM and monitors the outputs to determine the optimum inputs that are then provided to the CL plant. An estimator estimates the values of various internal state variables of the CL plant. The system has one structure adapted to control a CL plant that only provides pressure measurements in the CL loops A and B, a second structure adapted to a CL plant that provides pressure measurements and solid levels in both loops A, and B, and a third structure adapted to control a CL plant that provides full information on internal state variables. A final structure provides a neural network NMPC controller to control operation of loops A and B.

    Abstract: A solar thermal power system includes a solar receiver for heating thermal energy storage fluid to be stored and utilized from a thermal energy storage arrangement having hot and cold storage tanks. The system includes a steam generator arrangement, which utilizes the heat of the thermal energy storage fluid to produce steam to run a turbine. The arrangement includes a bypass line configured to bypass the hot storage tank from the steam generator arrangement, and to supply the hot thermal energy storage fluid from the solar receiver directly to the steam generator arrangement, during day times, when the solar receiver the steam generator arrangement are both in operating mode, thereby recovering stored potential energy available in the down corner hot thermal energy storage fluid from the solar receiver.
