Abstract:
A device for measuring metal purity, comprising a receptacle for holding a sample of molten metal, the receptacle being made, at least internally, from an insulating refractory material and having a bottom wall provided with a hole containing a filter element. The bottom wall is substantially impermeable to air except at the hold. An enclosed collection vessel is positioned below the receptacle for collecting molten metal which passes through the filter element from the receptacle, the collection vessel having an opening permitting extraction of gas from within the vessel to enable a vacuum to be generated within the vessel during use of the device. A leak-tight seal is established between the receptacle for molten metal and the collection vessel to permit vacuum generated in the collection vessel to draw molten metal into the collection vessel from the receptacle through the filter. The receptacle for molten metal has a heat diffusivity value that is sufficiently low that, in use, the temperature of the molten metal in the receptacle does not fall below the liquidus temperature in a period of time required for the vacuum to draw a fixed amount of molten metal sufficient for metal purity testing purposes through the filter and into the collection vessel from the receptacle. The invention also relates to a corresponding method, and to novel parts of the device.
Abstract:
Roof ridge vent system adapted for housing a plurality of fans in a central airflow channel positioned directly over the opening in a ridge portion of a roof for ventilating a plurality of vent chutes or attic space comprising: a hood member engaged with outer edge portions of vent members having air-passageway holes defined therein and inner edge portions preferably being hinged respectively to inner edge portions of base members so as to be adapted for installation on variously-pitched roofs, each base member also having outer edge portions defining a wall adapted for blocking wind from being blown into the vent and for causing airflow over the top of the vent to encourage airflow through the vent system. Vent member sections may be installed end-to-end to define an elongated airflow channel adapted for ventilating with or without assistance from the fans.
Abstract:
This invention relates generally to novel fibers and fabrics. Specifically, these fibers are prepared using propylene impact copolymer compositions. Fabrics, particularly nonwoven fabrics, formed from these fibers exhibit improved elongation properties.
Abstract:
A metal-matrix composite material includes a matrix having magnesium in an amount of more than about 0.3 weight percent but no more than about 2.5 weight percent, an alloying element of about 0.8 to about 2.5 weight percent iron or from about 1.0 to about 2.5 weight percent manganese, and the balance aluminum and impurities. Dispersed throughout the matrix is a plurality of metal oxide particles present in an amount of more than about 5 volume percent but no more than about 25 volume percent of the total volume of the matrix and the particles. This material may be cast into casting molds. After casting is complete and during solidification of the matrix alloy, a high volume fraction of intermetallic particles is crystallized in the matrix alloy. The total of the volume fractions of the metal oxide particles and the intermetallic particles is from about 10 to about 40 volume percent, preferably from about 25 to about 40 volume percent.
Abstract:
The invention provides a method for imparting resistance in animals to viruses, and in plants to viruses and viroids, that express double-stranded RNA-like structures (dsRNAs). This method enables the binding of pathogenic dsRNAs during the infection process by expression of dsRNA-binding protein in transgenic animal and plant hosts, thus interrupting the infection cycle and inhibiting disease. The presence of a dsRNA-binding protein in a transgenic host renders the transgenic host resistant to the phenotypic symptoms of viral infection and/or decreased pathogen replication. Accordingly, the present invention provides a genetically engineered animal and plant, stably transformed to express a dsRNA-binding protein, such that the transgenic host displays resistance to virus and/or viroid challenge.
Abstract:
A combination injection means, mold handling apparatus, and mold is disclosed which is capable of being attached to a conventional compression style press without undue modification thereof to thereby greatly enhance the efficiency thereof. The invention includes an injection cylinder and bracket means for attaching the same to the frame of the press without modification thereof and a manifold associated with the injection cylinder. A multi-plate mold structure is also disclosed which is capable of being incrementally indexed into and out of the press and also indexed into position for filling by the injection cylinder. Alternate mold assemblies are provided so that one can be located interiorly of the press for curing purposes, while the other is being stripped. A runner system is also provided in the manifold to enhance the efficiency of filling multiple mold cavities with a minimum of waste, and also means are disclosed for separating the press for removal of the cured part. The assembly thus disclosed has a capability of obtaining the advantages of both an injection system and a compression system. Additionally the sprues formed during molding are automatically removed, thereby effecting a great labor saving; and furthermore any work done with regard to the mold is done outside of the press area, thereby enhancing the safety properties.
