Abstract:
A diseased site, such as vascular dilatation site, is treated by first locally delivering to the site an agent that is effective to localize a desired drug and then systematically administering the drug.
Abstract:
Taking a bodily sample from deep within the body of a patient and collecting the sample outside the body to facilitate treatment of the patient. A sampling probe is provided in the form of an elongate catheter having a proximal portion that remains outside the body and a distal portion that can be located within the body. The distal portion includes a membrane with openings that communicate with space that communicates with a source of suction force. The catheter is positioned within the body. The sample is taken by exposing the membrane by placing it in proximity with a desired location so that the bodily sample is received by the membrane. The catheter is removed from the patient and the sample is collected outside the body.
Abstract:
Fire and chemical resistant, flexible composites are made from flexible woven, non-woven and knitted substrates and fluoropolymer containing films. Adhesives, such as melt adhesives, may be used in making the composites. The composites are suitable for use in protective garments, and in other articles where flexible chemically resistant materials are needed. A seaming technique for use in protective articles is described.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a class of polymers comprising recurring units of the formula ##STR1## where Mu is a divalent radical having the formula ##STR2## where each of D, D', E and E' is hydrogen, alkyl or substituted-alkyl; and Az is a divalent radical having the formula ##STR3## where each of R and R' is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl and W is a single bond, alkylene or alkenylene; or Az is a divalent radical having the formula ##STR4## where each of Y and Y' represent the atoms necessary to complete a piperazine or substituted-piperazine radical.Molecularly oriented polymers of the invention exhibit birefringence and can be utilized in filter, polarizing and other optical devices.
Abstract:
Solid compositions are disclosed comprising a complex of water; a benzotriazole of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently hydrogen, a monovalent organic radical, halogen, or nitro; and at least one water-soluble base having a basicity greater than that of the benzotriazole and capable of dissociating to provide an anion and a monovalent or divalent metal cation. The compositions have melting ranges above 35.degree. C. and are capable of releasing a substantial portion of the water contained therein to the surrounding environment when melted. The compositions can be employed in thermally developable photographic film units as thermally induced water-releasing materials which provide water to the internal environment of the film unit when the film unit is heated sufficiently to melt the composition.

Abstract:
Improved diffusion transfer photographic products and processes wherein a distinctive image-receiving sheet comprising a plurality of layers one of which comprises a polymeric material providing quaternary nitrogen groups is integrated with an integral negative-position diffusion transfer film unit.
Abstract:
A medical device includes a balloon catheter having an expandable member, e.g., an inflatable balloon, at its distal end and a stent or other endoprosthesis. The stent is, for example, an apertured tubular member formed of a polymer and is assembled about the balloon. The stent has an initial diameter for delivery into the body and can be expanded to a larger diameter by inflating the balloon.
Abstract:
Disclosed are implantable or insertable medical devices that provide resistance to microbial growth on and in the environment of the device and resistance to microbial adhesion and biofilm formation on the device. In particular, the invention discloses implantable or insertable medical devices that comprise at least one biocompatible matrix polymer region, an antimicrobial agent for providing resistance to microbial growth and a microbial adhesion/biofilm synthesis inhibitor for inhibiting the attachment of microbes and the synthesis and accumulation of biofilm on the surface of the medical device. Also disclosed are methods of manufacturing such devices under conditions that substantially prevent preferential partitioning of any of said bioactive agents to a surface of the biocompatible matrix polymer and substantially prevent chemical modification of said bioactive agents
