A method and apparatus of assembling a joint of an endless track chain for track-type machines to prevent endplay in the joint is disclosed. The joint includes a pair of links and a cylindrical pin. Each link includes a outwardly offset outboard end collar having a boss extending outwardly therefrom and a bore therethrough. Each boss has an outer surface. The pin includes opposite end portions. Each end portion is pressed and non-rotatably mounted into respective one of the bores of the outboard end collars. The method comprises the steps of forming an annular groove about each of the end portions, placing a swage tool against the outer side surface of the boss in axial alignment with the pin, and applying a sufficient force on the swage tool to form at least one mechanically formed nodule protruding from the outer side surface into a respective ones of the grooves. The nodule having a cross-sectional configuration substantially conforming to the groove.

A valve assembly for controlling actuation of an actuator of a track tensioning system for adjusting tension on a drive track chain includes a valve housing defining (i) a master chamber, (ii) a slave chamber, (iii) a fluid passage which fluidly couples the master chamber to the slave chamber, and (iv) a fluid outlet which fluidly couples the slave chamber to the actuator. The valve assembly also includes a master valve member positioned within the master chamber. The master valve member (i) isolates the master chamber from the slave chamber when the master valve member is positioned in a first master position, and (ii) places the master chamber in fluid communication with the slave chamber when the master valve member is positioned in a second master position. The valve assembly further includes a slave piston positioned within the slave chamber, the slave piston (i) isolates the fluid outlet from the slave chamber when the slave piston is positioned in a first slave position, and (ii) places the fluid outlet in fluid communication with the slave chamber when the slave piston is positioned in a second slave position. Movement of the master valve member from the first master position to the second master position causes movement of the slave piston from the first slave position to the second slave position. Movement of the slave piston from the first slave position to the second slave position causes actuation of the actuator, whereby tension on the drive track chain is adjusted by the actuator.

An idler wheel assembly for a track-type vehicle has a hub member and a plurality of replaceable wear segments positioned around the circumference of the hub. A plurality of U-shaped grooves in the circumferential surface of the hub receive resilient means. The wear segments also fit within the grooves and hold the resilient means in place. A plurality of clamping members encircle the hub, overlap the wear segments, and clamp the resilient means between the wear segments and the grooves as they are secured to the hub. The wear segments are therefore resiliently isolated from the idler hub. Conventional idler wheels for track-type vehicles have exterior rims which contact the track and guide the track as the vehicle is operated. This contact between the wheel rims an the track produces objectionable noise and vibration. The subject idler wheel assembly generates low levels of noise and vibration by isolating the rims or wear segments from the wheel hub with resilient rings.
