A secondary battery includes an electrode assembly having a first electrode plate, a second electrode plate, and a separator located between the first and second electrode plates, wherein the first electrode plate and the second electrode plate each have a coated portion and a non-coated portion; a case housing the electrode assembly; a first current collector and a second current collector electrically coupled to the electrode assembly; and a retainer coupled to the electrode assembly and to the first current collector to fix the first current collector to the electrode assembly.

Each of the current collecting plates includes a current collecting part and a welding part. The current collecting parts electrically connect to the electrode assembly. The welding part is welded to the electrode assembly and the current collecting part.

A container encases the electrode assembly. A hole formed on one end of the container with a stepped configuration that opens with different diameters on opposite sides of a cap plate and a safety valve mounted in the stepped surface of the hole, is configured to rupture and tear open upon occurrence of a predetermined internal battery pressure.
