摘要: A liquid crystal display device comprises: a layer of a chiral liquid crystal material disposed between first and second substrates; and means for applying a voltage across the liquid crystal layer. A first region of the liquid crystal layer is an active region for display and a second region of the liquid crystal layer is a nucleation region for generating a desired liquid crystal state in the first region when a voltage is applied across the liquid crystal layer. The ratio of the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer to the pitch p of the liquid crystal material has a first value (d/p)A in the first region of the liquid crystal layer and has a second value (d/p)N different from the first value in the second region of the liquid crystal layer. The value (d/p)N of the ratio of the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer to the pitch p of the liquid crystal material in the second region of the liquid crystal layer is selected such that, when no voltage is applied across the liquid crystal layer, the liquid crystal state stable in the second region of the liquid crystal layer is topologically equivalent to the desired liquid crystal state.

摘要: A pi-cell liquid crystal device comprises a nematic liquid crystal layer (17) disposed between alignment layers (14,15) which provide a pretilt such that, at a zero applied field, the energy of the H-state is less than the energy of the V-state, which is less than the energy of the T-state. A drive arrangement (18) switches the pi-cell by applying a first electric field, at which the energy of the V-state is less than the energy of each of the H-state and the T-state, or a second smaller electric field, at which the energy of the H-state is less than the energy of each of the V-state and the T-state. The T-state may thus be avoided while maintaining high switching speeds.

摘要: A display device is provided that comprises a liquid crystal display panel (2) for displaying an image by spatial light modulation. The image is represented by a plurality of image elements each having an image data value (7). The display device further comprises a display controller (1) arranged to determine a signal voltage to be applied to the panel (2) for each image element in dependence upon its image data value (7) and a secondary data value (8) for the element, there being a predetermined mapping between the data values and the signal voltage. The secondary data values (8) are arranged to vary across the image so as to introduce variations in luminance as a result of the mapping. The mapping and secondary data values (8) are mutually arranged to take account of the signal voltage to on-axis luminance response of the panel (2) so that the luminance variations introduced on-axis tend to balance locally through spatial averaging to, and hence would not be perceivable by, an on-axis viewer (3). The panel (2) furthermore has a non-linear off-axis luminance to on-axis luminance relationship, so that at least some of the luminance variations introduced off-axis do not balance locally through spatial averaging to, and hence would be perceivable by, an off-axis viewer (4).

摘要: An optical system is provided, for example for use with a display device (1) to convert a flat image from the display device (1) to a non-flat image. The optical system comprises first and second spaced-apart partial reflectors (3, 5), at least one of which is non-flat. The reflectors (3, 5), together with polarisation optics (2, 4), provide a light path (6) such that light from the display (1) is at least partially transmitted by the first reflector (3), partially reflected by the second reflector (5), partially reflected by the first reflector (3) and partially transmitted by the second reflector (5) so that a viewer (8) perceives a non-flat, for example curved, image. Light which does not follow the light path (6) is prevented from leaving the optical system.

摘要: A camera comprises an imaging system having a first depth of field for one or more first colours and a second depth of field, smaller than the first depth of field, for one or more second colours. The imaging system may comprise an iris with a first aperture for the first colour or colours and a second aperture, which is larger than the first, for the second colour or colours. The first aperture may be defined by an outer opaque ring (1) and the second by an inner chromatic ring (2). The inner ring (2) blocks the first colour(s) and passes the second colour(s). The image formed of the first colour(s) is sharper and its sharpness may be transposed by image processing to the other images.
