    摘要: A video encoder and corresponding method are provided for encoding an input picture or image block using a prediction from a reference-only picture, where the encoder includes a picture buffer for storing a previously coded picture, and a reference processing unit in signal communication with the picture buffer for generating the reference-only picture from a previously coded picture; and the corresponding method includes receiving a substantially uncompressed image block, filtering (714) a previously coded picture to create an adaptive reference, motion compensating the adaptive reference, subtracting the motion compensated adaptive reference from the substantially uncompressed image block, and encoding the difference between the substantially uncompressed image block and the motion compensated adaptive reference. Video decoder and corresponding method are also disclosed.

    摘要: Statistics for estimating quantization factors of a coding-unit type (e.g., B-coded or I-coded) pictures are determined from other, possibly different (e.g., P-coded) pictures, or previously coded coding-units. Bit rate and quality relationships between such coding-unit types may be used with the quantization parameters. Estimating bit rate and quality relationships between coding-unit types enables accurate rate control for pictures regardless of their coding-unit type. Bit rate and quality relationships between coding-unit types can be used with multiple rate control models to increase compression. Rate control parameters may be adjusted with statistics generated by a motion estimation and compensation framework. Rate control performance may be controlled in transcoding compressed bit streams.

    摘要: Simulation of film grain in an image can occur by compressing a video image, then transmitting compressed video together with a message containing at least one parameter indicative of the original film grain, to a decoder, and restoring the original grainy appearance of images by having the decoder simulating film grain based on the content of the film grain message. To improve efficiency, one or more parameters of film grain information undergo scaling in accordance with a target pixel block size for pixel blocks in the image. Such scaling allows for the use of conventional circuitry for performing block-based operations in connection with the film grain simulation.

    摘要: There are provided methods and apparatus for constrained prediction for reduced resolution update mode and complexity scalability in video encoders and decoders. A scalable complexity video encoder includes an encoder for encoding a block in a particular picture in the video sequence by generating an intra mode prediction for the block using a constrained intra prediction process that reduces artifacts for both low and high resolutions in a reduced resolution update mode when the particular picture is eventually decoded. The constrained intra prediction process reduces the artifacts by prohibiting the use of particular prediction modes associated with the introduction of the artifacts in the reduced resolution update mode.

    摘要: A hybrid intra-inter bi-predictive (or multi-predictive) coding mode allows both intraframe (intra) and interframe (inter) predictions to be combined together for hybrid-encoding a current macroblock or a subblock Bi-prediction may be used also in I-pictures, combining two intra predictions that use two different intra prediction directions. A video encoder processes data representing a two-dimensional video image which has been produced by a conventional commercially available video camera. The video encoder is adapted to select, for coding a current macroblock, between an intra encoding mode, an P-frame inter encoding mode, a B-frame bi-predictive inter mode, and a hybrid intra-inter bi-predictive encoding mode. A video decoder (800) receives and decodes a data stream that may contain a block/macroblock encoded in accordance with the hybrid intra-inter bi-predictive encoding mode.
