Statistics for estimating quantization factors of a coding-unit type (e.g., B-coded or I-coded) pictures are determined from other, possibly different (e.g., P-coded) pictures, or previously coded coding-units. Bit rate and quality relationships between such coding-unit types may be used with the quantization parameters. Estimating bit rate and quality relationships between coding-unit types enables accurate rate control for pictures regardless of their coding-unit type. Bit rate and quality relationships between coding-unit types can be used with multiple rate control models to increase compression. Rate control parameters may be adjusted with statistics generated by a motion estimation and compensation framework. Rate control performance may be controlled in transcoding compressed bit streams.

Simulation of film grain in an image can occur by compressing a video image, then transmitting compressed video together with a message containing at least one parameter indicative of the original film grain, to a decoder, and restoring the original grainy appearance of images by having the decoder simulating film grain based on the content of the film grain message. To improve efficiency, one or more parameters of film grain information undergo scaling in accordance with a target pixel block size for pixel blocks in the image. Such scaling allows for the use of conventional circuitry for performing block-based operations in connection with the film grain simulation.

There is provided a compression method for handling local brightness variation in video. The compression method estimates the weights from previously encoded and reconstructed neighboring pixels of the current block in the source picture and their corresponding motion predicted (or collocated) pixels in the reference pictures. Since the information is available in both the encoder and decoder for deriving these weights, no additional bits are required to be transmitted.

A scalable complexity video encoder includes an encoder for encoding a block in a particular picture in the video sequence by generating an intra mode prediction for the block using a constrained intra prediction process that reduces artifacts for both low and high resolutions in a reduced resolution update mode when the particular picture is eventually decoded. The constrained intra prediction process reduces the artifacts by prohibiting the use of particular prediction modes associated with the introduction of the artifacts in the reduced resolution update mode.

The methods and apparatuses take advantage of the temporal and/or spatial correlations that may exist within portions of the frames, e.g., at the Macroblocks level, etc. The methods and apparatuses tend to significantly reduce the amount of data required for encoding motion information while retaining or even improving video image quality.
