A method and apparatus by which liquid stored in a storage chamber passes through a filling line to a freezing chamber from which it is dispensed. The liquid in the storage chamber is continuously circulated by a circulation pump to withdraw liquid therefrom and to return it through a standpipe having a restricted outlet. When the temperature in the storage chamber increases to a predetermined point, such temperature is sensed to cause a valve to open in a return line that leads from the freezing chamber to the storage chamber whereby liquid in the storage chamber is partially replaced by refrigerated liquid which may include ice particles from the freezing chamber.

A regulated flow of water is refrigerated, and a source of concentrated orange juice at atmospheric pressure is also refrigerated and is metered and combined with the water under pressure in a refrigerated blending and storage device along with nitrous oxide gas, and the resulting mixture is transferred to a separate freezing chamber where water is frozen from the mixture as pure ice. The mixture is dispensed from the freezing chamber to atmospheric pressure so that the nitrous oxide gas breaks out of the semifrozen product to render it fluffy.

Water, syrup, and carbon dioxide gas are combined after precooling the liquids in a refrigerated carbonator, operating at a first static pressure, and thence conducted through a pressure regulator valve to a freezing chamber operating at a lower static pressure where the product is converted into a slush type of beverage under temperature and pressure conditions such that free carbon dioxide gas will be diffused throughout the product which is saturated with CO2 gas in solution. Temperature in the carbonator is used to regulate the carbonating pressure.
