Applicants have discovered that the conversion efficiency of doped glass optical second harmonic generators can be enhanced when the frequency .omega. of the fundamental beam or the frequency 2.omega. of the harmonic beam is chosen near the resonance frequency of an optical transition in the dopant. This resonant enhancement is demonstrated for Tm doped aluminosilicate glass fibers where tuning of the fundamental writing beam to a resonance frequency enhances the second harmonic output by a factor of 10.sup.3.

Indiscriminately exciting the modes of a multi-mode optical fiber amplifier is avoided by an optical fiber amplifier design in which the excitation of pump modes in the core of a multi-mode fiber is controlled by controlling the pump light launching. The pump light is directed substantially along the center axis of a multi-mode fiber within a predetermined launch angle. Rather than exciting all modes, only lower order modes are affected.

A light generation and amplification system includes a length of laser-active filter fiber having a refractive index profile that suppresses unwanted Stokes orders at wavelengths longer than a target wavelength and that has normal dispersion over its operating wavelength. A nested series of reflectors is provided at the fiber's input and output ends, and are configured to provide a nested series of Raman cavities, separated in wavelength by approximately the respective Stokes shifts. The first cavity in the series is a combined cavity that provides laser oscillation due to a combination of ionic gain and feedback at a selected first wavelength and that provides Raman gain to light at the first Stokes shift of the first wavelength when light at the first wavelength has an energy exceeding a Raman scattering threshold. The Raman cavities provide a stepwise transition between the first wavelength and the target wavelength.

The specification describes an optical fiber device wherein a LOM is converted to an HOM prior to entering the gain section. The gain section is a few mode fiber that supports the HOM. The output from the gain section, i.e. the HOM, may be utilized as is, or converted back to the LOM. With suitable design of the few mode fiber in the gain section of the device, the effective area, Aeff, may be greater than 1600 μm2. The large mode separation in the gain section reduces mode coupling, allowing greater design freedom and reducing the bend sensitivity of the optical fiber.

The high-power amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a fiber amplifier, which is already in the optical fiber, is efficiently divided into many channels using a WDM demultiplexer. This "spectrum-sliced" ASE is used as light sources for WDM systems rather than several wavelength-selected DFB lasers.

The method includes collapsing a silica-based glass tube to make a preform and drawing fiber from the preform. Prior to collapsing the tube, one or more glass layers are formed on the inner surface of the tube by dip-coating the surface with a sol comprising a metal alkoxide dissolved in an alcoholic or aqueous solvent, polymerizing the sol to form a gel, and drying and sintering the gel. A substantial portion the dopant, present within the sintered gel, diffuses into at least one adjoining glass region. A wide selection of dopant materials, in the form of salts or alkoxides, are readily incorporated by dissolving them in the solvent.
