    摘要: An optical data link using a single optical fiber for bi-directional optical communication. Bi-direction optical transceivers couple to the single optical fiber having two optical channels of communication. An optical subassembly in each optical transceiver to multiplex an optical transmit signal and demultiplex an optical receive signal within the bi-direction optical transceiver. The optical subassembly includes an optical block with an optical filter to reflect at least one wavelength of light and to allow passage of another wavelength of light. Embodiments of the optical block with the optical filter are described.

    摘要: An optical communications system using forward error correction (FEC) to correct errors in signals carried by the system. Optical signals on the system are dropped at nodes and converted to electrical signals by avalanche photodiodes (APDs) at the node receivers. An FEC chip operates on the electrical signal to correct errors. The error rate is used to control the APD bias voltage which affects signal noise and therefore error rate. The errors in a predetermined interval are counted and a determination made as to whether the error rate is rising with time. The bias voltage is derived from the value of a counter whose count is incremented each interval. If the error rate is rising, the counting direction is changed.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for transferring information of an optical information-bearing signal from a first wavelength to a second wavelength. The method is implemented in an all-optical wavelength converter circuit which includes a laser diode in communication with a polarization controller. An information-bearing signal having a first wavelength is input to the circuit. A polarization controller adjusts the polarization of the information-bearing signal. The laser diode receives the polarization-adjusted information-bearing signal and generates a converted information-bearing signal by transferring the information of the polarization-adjusted information-bearing signal from the first wavelength to the second wavelength. The polarization controller receives the converted information-bearing signal from the laser diode, and polarizes the converted information-bearing signal.

    摘要: A balanced photoreceiver which includes one or more photodiodes coupled to an amplifier that includes a common base configured input stage which operates over a frequency band from DC to millimeter wave frequencies. In one embodiment of the invention, the amplifier is formed as a three-stage direct coupled amplifier which includes a direct coupled complementary common base configured input stage, a complementary common emitter configured Darlington pair intermediate stage and a complementary common collector configured output stage. The common collector configured output stage is used to recombine the complementary current outputs from the input and intermediate stages. The photoreceiver in accordance with the present invention provides relatively superior output waveform symmetry over an increasing power input.

    摘要: An optoelectronic module includes one or more VCSEL transmitters and/or photodetectors coincidentally aligned along a common central longitudinal axis. Differing wavelengths of light can be received and transmitted by the optoelectronic module optically coupled to a single optical fiber or in a free-space link. The optoelectronic module is able to receive two wavelengths and transmit one wavelength, or can transmit two wavelengths in the optical link. The VCSEL transmitter can be optically pumped by a vertically integrated pump VCSEL. A parallel optical link supports transmission and reception for each duplex channel on a single optical fiber. The parallel optical link includes an array of optical fibers, a first array of optoelectronic modules optically coupled to the array of optical fibers to transmit a laser signal having a first wavelength and receive a laser signal having a second wavelength, and a second array of optoelectronic modules optically coupled to the array of optical fibers to transmit the laser signal having the second wavelength and receive the laser signal having the first wavelength. A multi-channel data distribution system enables bidirectional distribution of data between a central distribution point and a number of nodes optically linked to the central distribution point.

    摘要: A True Time Delay system for creating variable time delays of an optical signal suitable for use with a phased array antenna system in order to avoid beam-squint in broadband applications. The TTD is adapted to be integrated on a planar silica waveguide in order to substantially reduce the package size of the device. In one embodiment of the invention, the TTD is formed from a polarization beam splitter, a polarization rotator and a spiral waveguide. In an alternate embodiment of the invention, the TTD includes a polarization sensitive Mach Zehnder interferometer, a quarter wave polarization rotator and a spiral waveguide. In both embodiments of the invention Bragg reflective gratings are written into the spiral waveguide at different spacings to reflect optical signals of different wavelengths to create various time delays.
