    摘要: The present invention relates to a rigid disc substrate for use in a magneto-optical drive, and two methods and apparatus to solve the above-mentioned problems. A method for writing a servo pattern on a magneto-optical rigid media, after the media optical film is deposited. The method involves an image transfer process, wherein a light source provides an energy pulse to heat up the magneto-optical film above its compensation temperature. Light is directed onto the film through a photo mask which has a prewritten servo pattern on it. The image on the mask is transferred to the magneto-optic disc when an external field is applied by a magnetic field generating coil which defines the area illuminated by the source where the pattern is to be written. In an alternative approach, the mask may be in contact with the media while the light exposure and magnetic field are applied. In a further alternative, the image transfer is achieved with a scanning method whereby the light source is scanned through the mask with the aid of a scanning device while the external magnetic field is applied. This scanning method applies equally well with projection image transfer or contact image transfer.

    摘要: A method of making a disc for a computer disc drive and a disc made in accordance with the same. The disc includes a deposited magnetic layer of a thin film medium over a disc-shaped substrate. A master pattern having a plurality of tracks is recorded on the disc. Each track on the disc includes a plurality of magnetic islands, each having a size and magnetic properties. The size and/or magnetic properties of one or more of the magnetic islands of each track are modulated such that each track has a modulation frequency, so as to imprint a magnetic topology on the disc. The modulation frequency of each track is either a fundamental frequency or an overtone of the fundamental frequency.

    摘要: A polarization detection system structured for optical read-out of disc-shaped optical data/information storage and retrieval media with surfaces comprised of pits or marks configured as multilevel oriented nano-structures (ONS) with varying pit or mark orientations and widths. The polarization detection system comprises: an optical beam source; a stage for mounting and rotating an optical disc medium about a central axis; at least one photodetector; a beam splitter positioned in an optical path between the source and stage, for directing an incident beam from the source onto an optical disc mounted on the stage and a return beam from the disc onto the photodetector; and an optical polarizer positioned in an optical path between the beam splitter and the at least one photodetector, for detection and analysis of changes in polarization of the return beam effected by variation of the orientation of the walls and/or widths of the pits or marks of the disc.

    摘要: The active vibration suppression of a slider suspension arm is achieved by including as part of the suspension arm two bimorph piezoelectric elements. A first bimorph piezoelectric element is attached to the top of the suspension arm and acts as a sensor. A second bimorph piezoelectric element is attached to the bottom of the suspension arm and acts as an actuator. The actuator is controlled as a function of a voltage measured by the sensor so that the actuator damps periodic vibrations occurring in the suspension arm.
