Abstract: A system and method for position sensorless control of an AC electric machine is disclosed. A drive system for driving an AC electric machine provides a primary current excitation to drive the AC electric machine, the primary current excitation comprising a current vector having a magnitude and angle. The drive system injects a carrier signal to the AC electric machine that is superimposed onto the current vector, with the carrier signal being selected to generate a carrier response signal that has sensitivity to magnetic alignment information of the AC electric machine at its operating point. The drive system measures at least one magnetic alignment signature of the AC electric machine from the generated carrier response signal and controls an orientation of the current vector using the measured at least one magnetic alignment signature, so as to achieve a desired magnetic operation of the AC electric machine.

Abstract: According to some embodiments, a start-stop system for a vehicle is disclosed. The start-stop system includes a first energy storage device coupled to a starter motor. The start-stop system also includes a first DC-to-AC inverter coupled to the first energy storage device, a starter/alternator coupled to the first DC-to-AC inverter, and a second DC-to-AC inverter coupled to the starter/alternator. The start-stop system further includes a second energy storage device coupled to the second DC-to-AC inverter. The start-stop system finally includes a controller configured to control the two DC-to-AC inverters such that either the starter motor or starter/alternator starts the vehicle based on the state of charge of the second energy storage device.

Abstract: A method for shutting down a phase-leg of a three-level active neutral point clamped converter is provided. The method includes the following steps. A determining step determines if a switch fault has occurred, and if a switch fault has occurred then each switch of the plurality of switches are turned off. If a switch fault has not occurred and a shutdown is requested, then an operating step operates the plurality of switches to turn off a first switch and a fourth switch. A waiting step waits for a first predetermined time period. An operating step operates the plurality of switches to turn on a second switch and a third switch. A waiting step is repeated. An operating step operates the plurality of switches to turn off a fifth switch and a sixth switch. A waiting step is repeated. An operating step turns off the second switch and the third switch.
