To prepare concentrated solutions of cationic polyazo dyestuffs of the formula ##STR1## in which R represents hydrogen or methyl andR.sup.1 represents an alkyl radical which has 1 to 3 carbon atoms and is optionally substituted by hydroxyl, alkoxy or halogen,and mixing coupling products thereof with aromatic monoamines, diaminobenzenes of the general formula ##STR2## in which R has the abovementioned meaning,if appropriate mixed with up to 30 mol % of aromatic monoamines of the formula ##STR3## in which R.sup.2 represents hydrogen, C.sub.1 - to C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 - toC.sub.4 -alkoxy or C.sub.1 - to C.sub.4 -acylamino andn denotes a number from 1 to 3,are dissolved in aliphatic carboxylic acids which have 2 to 4 carbon atoms and can optionally be substituted by halogen, hydroxyl or alkoxy, and are reacted with 0.5 to 0.75 mol of a salt or ester of nitrous acid per mol of diamine at 0.degree. to 30.degree. C.

To prepare dyestuffs of the general formula ##STR1## or color bases of the general formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 denote hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl,R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 denote methyl or ethyl andX denotes an anion,and wherein the rings A and B and the radicals R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 can carry non-ionic substituents and the rings A and B can carry further fused-on rings, an amine of the formula ##STR3## wherein B has the abovementioned meaning, and a compound of the formula ##STR4## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and A have the abovementioned meanings andR.sup.5 and R.sup.6 represent hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, phenoxy or phenyl,are reacted, in the presence of an acid, with a substance which releases nitrous acid and, if appropriate, the product is then reacted with a compound which forms the radicals R.sup.1' and/or R.sup.2', which represent alkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl which are optionally substituted by non-ionic radicals, and X.

Dyestuffs of the formula ##STR1## WHEREIN R.sub.1 is a straight-chain alkyl, alkenyl, or alkinyl of 3-6 carbon atoms or aralkyl; R.sub.2 is aryl; R.sub.3 is hydrogen, straight-chain alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms, straight-chain alkenyl or alkinyl of 3-6 carbon atoms or aralkyl; An is an anion; and the cyclic and acyclic radicals can be further substituted by non-ionic substituents. These dyestuffs are suitable for dyeing and printing of natural and synthetic materials, particularly of polyacrylonitrile, copolymers of acrylonitrile with other vinyl compounds, of acid modified polyesters and acid modified polyamides.

A dyestuff laser which consists of a reservoir for the dyestuff solution and an energy source, coupled thereto, which is capable of exciting the dyestuff solution to produce an emission, the radiation generated lying in the wavelength range of 550 to 680 nm. The dyestuff is a sulforhodamine.
