A lubricating oil comprising a base oil of specified carbon types, less than 5 wt % hydrocarbon solvent, and a detergent/dispersant additive package, wherein the lubricating oil has a blend kinematic viscosity at 100° C. of 6.5 mm2/s or greater, good low temperature fluidity, and a high exhaust smoke index. Also, similar lubricating oils made using a base oil made from a waxy feed, or comprising a base oil with a low Noack volatility and a pour point reducing blend component, or a base oil with a high viscosity index. Additionally, lubricating base oils meeting the requirements for two-cycle gasoline engine lubricants.

Lubricant blends and finished gear oils comprising a lubricant base oil fraction derived from highly paraffinic wax, a petroleum derived base oil, and a pour point depressant are provided. The lubricant base oil fraction derived from highly paraffinic wax comprises less than 0.30 weight percent aromatics, greater than 5 weight percent molecules with cycloparaffinic functionality, and a ratio of weight percent of molecules with monocycloparaffinic functionality to weight percent of molecules with multicycloparaffinic functionality greater than 15. The petroleum derived base oils comprises greater than 90 weight percent saturates and less than 300 ppm sulfur and is preferably selected from the group consisting of a Group II base oil, a Group III base oil, and mixtures thereof. These lubricant blends have surprising low Brookfield viscosities at −40° C.

A lubricant, comprising a light base oil fraction having a wt % Noack volatility between 0 and 100 and additionally less than a Noack Volatility Factor (NVF), wherein the Noack Volatility Factor is defined by the equation; 900×(Kinematic Viscosity at 100° C.)−2.8−15, and optionally one or more additional additives. A process to make the light base oil fraction, comprising hydroisomerization dewaxing a waxy feed in a series of two or more reactors, and recovering the light base oil fraction having a low wt % Noack volatility. Also, a light base oil fraction having a wt % Noack volatility between 0 and 100 and additionally less than the NVF, made by the process of hydroisomerization dewaxing a waxy feed in a series of reactors.
