Amine functional urethane copolymers dispersible in water with the aid of a solubilizing acid are provided by copolymerizing (A) 5-75% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated urethane amine free of epoxy groups and formed by reacting an epoxy-functional urethane in which the urethane groups are ethylenically unsaturated with a monosecondary amine; and (B) the balance consisting essentially of copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomers. These monomers preferably include amine-functional monomers to further increase the amine functionality.

Monoethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable monomers are disclosed which improve the adhesion of copolymers (especially those produced by aqueous emulsion copolymerization to provide latex paint). These monomers are the reaction product of one equivalent of a monoethylenically unsaturated compound which resists homopolymerization and which carries a single isocyanate-reactive hydrogen atom, such as 2-hydroxypropyl monobutyl maleate, one mole of an organic polyisocyanate, such as 2,4-toluene diisocyanate, and sufficient alkyl alkylene urea carrying a single isocyanate-reactive hydrogen atom on the alkyl group, such as 2-hydroxyethyl ethylene urea, to consume the remaining isocyanate functionality on the polyisocyanate. An improved method of producing these monomers from a mixture of all three reactants is also disclosed.

Aqueous thermosetting coating compositions are disclosed characterized by reduced curing requirements and which produce coatings having superior cured properties. These coatings comprise water containing water miscible organic solvent and the compositions have dispersed therein, based on total resin solids, from 25% to 85% of carboxy-functional organic solvent-soluble copolymer salt with a volatile amine in which the copolymer contains hydroxy groups providing an hydroxyl value in the range of 30 to 300, from 5% to 40% of a water soluble or water dispersible aminoplast or phenoplast curing agent, and from 2% to 35%, of a water dispersible epoxy phosphate ester polymer which is an oxirane-function-free, salt reaction product of (1) a monoester reaction product containing residual epoxy functionality, of (a) a resinous polyepoxide having at least about 1.4 oxirane groups per molecule, and (b) less than 0.9 mole of orthophosphoric acid for each oxirane equivalent in the polyepoxide, with (2) at least 1 mole of a volatile amine per equivalent of oxirane functionality in the monoester.

Water dispersible epoxy-phosphate ester polymer salts are disclosed which exhibit improved stability in coating compositions contining aminoplast or phenoplast resin. These salts are provided by reacting a resinous polyepoxide having at least about 1.4 oxirane groups per molecule with less than 0.9 mol of orthophosphoric acid for each oxirane equivalent in the polyepoxide to form a monoester reaction product containing residual epoxy functionality. The monoester reaction product so-provided is then reacted with at least 1 mol of a volatile amine per equivalent of oxirane functionality in said monoester to provide a water dispersible product lacking oxirane functionality. Ether alcohols, and especially 2-butoxy ethanol, are relied upon to provide dispersions having low viscosity.

The production of amine resins having Mannich base groups which dissolve in water with the aid of a solubilizing acid is disclosed in which a dihydric phenolic organic compound, such as a bisphenol, is reacted in organic solvent medium with at least 3 moles of formaldehyde per mol of bisphenol to at least partially methylolate the bisphenol prior to other reactions. The at least partially methylolated product is then reacted with a stoichiometric deficiency of organic diepoxide, and then with monosecondary amine to provide Mannich base groups. The Mannich base-containing product is then reacted with additional epoxide-functional material.

Water soluble epoxy ester copolymers adapted for sanitary can use comprise an hydroxy functional epoxy ester of a polyepoxide having an average molecular weight of about 300 to about 1100 and a 1,2-epoxy equivalency of about 1.4 to about 2.0, esterified with an at least approximately stoichiometric proportion, based on epoxide functionality, of monocarboxylic acid selected from benzoic acid, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl substituted benzoic acid, and C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 alkanoic acid, the esterification reaction being continued to provide an acid number of less than 20, this hydroxy functional epoxy ester is polyesterified with from 1.5-8%, based on the weight of the epoxy ester, of a monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid which resists homopolymerization to an acid number of less than 20, and the polyester so obtained is copolymerized with from 15% to 70% of monoethylenic monomers, based on the copolymer, these monoethylenic monomers including carboxyl functional monomer providing an acid number of from 20-100 in the copolymer. The copolymers are dispersed in water by salt formation with an amine and aminoplast or phenoplast resin is incorporated to provide curing reactivity.

Cationic amine-functional copolymer mixtures with aminoplast resins which are stably dispersible in water with the aid of a solubilizing acid and water miscible organic solvent, and which cure to possess superior detergent and corrosion resistance are provided by forming a solution copolymer of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers including from 3% to 35% of monomer having a basic amino group and from 20% to less than 35% of isobutoxymethyl acrylamide or methacrylamide. The copolymer preferably includes from 20% to 45% of styrene and/or vinyl toulene in admixture with from 15% to 40% of 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate and the preferred aminoplast resins are benzoguanamine-formaldehyde and bisphenol-formaldehyde.
