The aromatic hydrocarbon resin can be used as a coating material and a resist resin for a semiconductor, and has a high carbon concentration and a low oxygen concentration. A composition for forming an underlayer film for lithography that has excellent etching resistance as an underlayer film for a multilayer resist process, an underlayer film formed with the same, and a pattern forming method using the same are disclosed. An aromatic hydrocarbon is reacted with an aromatic aldehyde in the presence of an acidic catalyst, thereby providing an aromatic hydrocarbon resin that has a high carbon concentration of from 90 to 99.9% by mass and a low oxygen concentration of from 0 to 5% by mass. A composition for forming an underlayer film for lithography contains the resin and an organic solvent, an underlayer film is formed with the same, and a pattern forming method uses the same.

The present invention provides a polyfunctional dimethylnaphthalene formaldehyde resin which is polyfunctional, rich in reactivity and useful as a variety of raw materials to be modified, specifically a dimethylnaphthalene formaldehyde resin obtained by allowing (1) one kind or two or more kinds of a dimethylnaphthalene having one methyl group on each of two benzene rings in a naphthalene ring thereof and selected from the group consisting of 1,5-dimethylnaphthalene, 1,6-dimethylnaphthalene, 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene, 1,7-dimethylnaphthalene, 1,8-dimethylnaphthalene and 2,7-dimethylnaphthalene; and (2) formaldehyde to react with each other in the presence of water and an acid catalyst, the polyfunctional dimethylnaphthalene formaldehyde resin having a mean value of the number of hydrogen atoms substituted by the reaction among the six hydrogen atoms directly bonded on the naphthalene ring in the dimethylnaphthalene of from 1.8 to 3.5.

An oral hygiene instrument according to this invention by means of vibration generating means vibrates by way of a holder member an oral hygiene tool removably attached to the holder member and comprises a cap member having a cap side thread portion which meshes with a holder side thread portion formed at a first end of the holder member which cap member is removably attached to the first end of the holder member and closes an opening in the first end of the holder member, a seal ring fitted on a portion of the holder member or the cap member at the external end of the part where the two members mesh which seal ring is pressed upon by either the cap member or the holder member and seals the gap between the holder member and the cap member within a range of a predetermined angle of screwing of the cap member with respect to the holder member from a late stage to completion of said screwing, and a holder side contact piece and a cap side contact piece mounted in the holder member and the cap member respectively which approach each other when the cap member is screwed with respect to the holder member and in the range of the predetermined angle make contact and close a circuit supplying electricity to the vibration generating means. An aromatic hydrocarbon formaldehyde resin novolak, useful as a raw phenolic compound for producing a curing agent and an epoxy resin, an epoxy resin composition which contains a novolak type epoxy resin derived from the above novolak resin and an epoxy resin and is therefore excellent in heat resistance, adhesion and humidity resistance, and a process for the production of a phenolic resin, which comprises reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon formaldehyde resin, phenol and formaldehyde in a novolak-forming reaction in the presence of a catalyst to prepare an aromatic hydrocarbon formaldehyde resin novolak, and treating the reaction product with steam while maintaining the temperature of a reaction mixture at 120.degree. to 195.degree. C. to remove unreacted substances and to decompose high-molecular-weight polymers.
