A weatherseal or belt-line seal for a vehicle is formed by extrusion of an olefin-based thermoplastic elastomer or vulcanizate (first TPV) as an elongate body of arbitrary length and cross-section. The cross-section is adapted for use in a particular location in the opening of a structure to be protected against wind and rain, for example around the glass of a window in a vehicle's door, or around the opening (at the periphery) in which the door is closed, so as to present at least one sealing surface against which the glass or door may be abutted to provide a seal against the elements. A slip-coating is co-extruded onto one or more longitudinal sealing surfaces of the body; the slip-coating contains a novel compatibilizer which allows thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to be chemically bonded to a graft copolymer of polypropylene (PP) and a compound having two anhydride groups. The reaction product of the grafted PP and the TPU effects a thermal bond with the sealing surface of the body. The slip-coating has a combination of softness and abrasion resistance which are uniquely suited for the purpose of the weatherseal.

Desirable thermoplastic vulcanizates can be prepared from a polar engineering thermoplastic; a halogenated copolymer of p-alkylstyrene and an isomonoolefin having from 4 to 7 carbon atoms; and either an ethylene rubbery polymer or a diene based rubbery polymer or combinations thereof. The ethylene rubbery polymer desirably has at least one pendant carboxylic acid group, amine group, epoxy group, hydroxyl group or an anhydride of two carboxylic acid groups or combinations thereof. Desirable diene based rubbery polymers include epoxidized natural rubber and epoxidized homopolymers and copolymers of dienes.

A thermoplastic elastomer is formed from a thermoplastic polymer such as a polyester, polycarbonate, or combinations thereof or a polyamide, which polymer is melt blended with an acrylic rubber. The acrylic rubber desirably has from about 0.5 to about 5 mole percent repeat units from halogen (desirably chlorine) containing monomer. Subsequently the acrylic rubber is crosslinked with 2,5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole or a derivative thereof. Such a thermoplastic elastomer may have a compression set less than 50% making it useful in applications involving continuous use under compression.

Processes for the preparation of a thermoplastic elastomer comprising a triblend of engineering resin, dynamically vulcanized alloy of thermoplastic olefin polymer and elastomeric copolymer, and a compatibilizer for the engineering resin and alloy. The compatibilizer can be formed in a separate step or in-situ in a one step process. The processes produce compositions which retain structural integrity at high temperature, and have good tensile properties, elongation and fluid resistance.

The thermoplastic elastomer compositions contain a continuous phase or matrix of an engineering thermoplastic such as ester polymer and a discontinuous phase of an acrylic rubber which is cured substantially by using epoxidized oils. The cured composition which can be dynamically vulcanized has good physical properties such as tensile strength, elongation, and high temperature resistance.
