Compounds of the general formula ##STR1## wherein R represents hydrogen or alkyl andA represents a radical of the formula ##STR2## wherein the rings D can carry up to 4 alkyl radicals,R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 independently of one another represent alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl andR.sup.3 represents hydrogen, alkyl or aryl,and the said cyclic and acyclic radicals and the rings B and C may carry nonionic substituents, are used as color-forming agents.

Dyestuff laser consisting of a reservoir, with a laser dyestuff solution contained therein, and a pumped light source associated therewith, which is capable of exciting the dyestuff solution to produce an emission, characterized in that the dyestuff solution contains, in a solvent which does not interfere with the emission, a dyestuff which, in the form of the free acid, corresponds to the general formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 to R.sub.4 independently of one another represent hydrogen, alkyl, trifluormethyl, alkoxy, aralkoxy, alkenyloxy, halogen or the carboxyl, cyano, alkylsulphone, aryl-sulphone, carboxamide, sulphonamide or carboxylic acid ester group,R.sub.1 and R.sub.4 can additionally denote a fused-on benzene ring,n represents a number 2 to 6 ando, p, q and r independently of one another represent 0, 1 or 2,in a concentration, preferably of 10.sup.-2 to 10.sup.-5 mol/1, which emits laser radiation.

Optical brighteners of the formula ##STR1## wherein B denotes a direct bond or the 1,4-phenylene radical andR.sub.1 and R.sub.2 independently of one another denote hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, or together form a fused aromatic ring,or the quaternisation products and protonation products thereof, are outstandingly suitable for the white tinting of polyester fibres or acrylic fibres. They are distinguished by a good build-up capacity and a small tendency to develop a green tone.

Dyestuffs of the formula ##STR1## WHEREIN R.sub.1 is a straight-chain alkyl, alkenyl, or alkinyl of 3-6 carbon atoms or aralkyl; R.sub.2 is aryl; R.sub.3 is hydrogen, straight-chain alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms, straight-chain alkenyl or alkinyl of 3-6 carbon atoms or aralkyl; An is an anion; and the cyclic and acyclic radicals can be further substituted by non-ionic substituents. These dyestuffs are suitable for dyeing and printing of natural and synthetic materials, particularly of polyacrylonitrile, copolymers of acrylonitrile with other vinyl compounds, of acid modified polyesters and acid modified polyamides.

A dyestuff laser which consists of a reservoir for the dyestuff solution and an energy source, coupled thereto, which is capable of exciting the dyestuff solution to produce an emission, the radiation generated lying in the wavelength range of 550 to 680 nm. The dyestuff is a sulforhodamine.
