Abstract: A system includes sensing modules positioned along a length of a drill string. Each sensing module includes a structure arrangement composed of an outer structure body having a cavity and an inner structure body rotatably supported within the cavity. The structure arrangement is coupled to the drill string such that rotation of the drill string produces a relative rotation between the structure bodies. Ball elements are disposed in a gap between the structure bodies and move along a predetermined path defined in the gap in response to relative rotation between the structure bodies. Movable elements are positioned to physically interact with the ball elements as the ball elements move along the predetermined path. Energy harvesters in the sensor modules generate electrical energy from the mechanical energy produced by physical interaction between the ball elements and movable elements. The sensing modules include sensors to measure parameters in the drill string environment.

Abstract: A system for gathering downhole measurements includes a drill bit, at least one nozzle receptacle located on the drill bit, and a sensor system. The sensor system has a sensor housing, a flow path extending through the sensor housing, wherein the flow path allows fluid to flow through the sensor housing, and an internal cavity provided within the sensor housing separate from the flow path. The internal cavity contains components that include at least one sensor for gathering data about drill bit conditions and downhole conditions, a powering unit, a printed circuit board, and an electrical conductor, wherein the sensor housing is installed in the at least one nozzle receptacle.

Abstract: Methods and systems for monitoring conditions within a wellbore of a subterranean well include extending a drill string into the subterranean well from a terranean surface. The drill string has an actuator assembly, a sensor compartment, and a plurality of sensors located within the sensor compartment. The actuator assembly is instructed to transmit a swarm release signal to a central power unit of the sensor compartment so that the central power unit of the sensor compartment releases certain of the plurality of sensors from the sensor compartment. Data from the sensors is transferred to a data processing system after the sensors reach the terranean surface.

Abstract: Tools and methods are described to measure dimensions of wellbores. Downhole caliper tools include a downhole collar and an uphole collar having a running position and a sensing position. The uphole collar is farther from the downhole collar in the running position than in the sensing position. A caliper sensor assembly includes: a sensor module defining tracks extending parallel to an axis of the caliper tool, the sensor module positioned towards an uphole end of the caliper tool relative to the uphole collar; and a caliper disposed between the downhole collar and the uphole collar including: a flexible mesh extending from the downhole collar to the uphole collar. Movement of the uphole collar from the running position to the sensing position axially compresses and radially expands the flexible mesh. The annular sensor module can measure dimensions of the flexible mesh relative to the axis of the caliper tool.

Abstract: Wireless mobile devices are injected into a wellbore with a cement slurry, during the cementing of casing, to monitor and evaluate cement sheath parameters. Passive, wireless sensors are utilized to not only measure the elastic constitutive properties of the cement sheath such as compressive strength, but also parameters of the cement sheath environment, such as temperature, pressure, humidity, pH and gases present, to identify potential issues about the structural integrity of the cement sheath, and provide timely warnings to perform remedial actions.

Abstract: A drilling system measures a fluid level in a wellbore. The drilling system may include a drill pipe and a sensor sleeve attached to the drill pipe. The sensor sleeve may include a transmitter that transmits a sensing signal in a direction of a fluid in the wellbore, a receiver that receives the sensing signal after the sensing signal is reflected on a surface of the fluid, and a repeater that determines a distance between the sensor sleeve and the fluid level from the transmitted and received sensing signal. The fluid level in the wellbore may be calculated using the distance determined by the repeater and a distance between the sensor sleeve and a surface of the wellbore.

Abstract: An intelligent drilling system is disclosed. The intelligent drilling system includes an inner drill pipe adapted to rotate around a longitudinal axis in a transversal plane of a wellbore to advance a drill bit during a drilling operation, an external drill string shield surrounding the inner drill pipe and coupled to the inner drill pipe via at least one bearing system, the at least one bearing system adapted to decouple the external drill string shield from a rotational motion of the inner drill pipe in the transversal plane such that the external drill string shield remains substantially stationary during the drilling operation, and an in-situ sensing system disposed on an interior wall of the external drill string shield to measure at least one downhole parameter of the wellbore.

Abstract: A system for monitoring an annular fluid level may include a floating element disposed on a surface of a drilling fluid within an annulus of the well, during mud cap drilling operations. The system may also include an antenna disposed above the floating element. The antenna may be configured to transmit a first signal to the floating element, and to receive a second signal from the floating element in response to the first signal. The system may also include a processor configured to determine a time value that measures a time between a transmittal, by the antenna, of the first signal and a receipt, by the antenna, of the second signal. The processor may also determine a state of a drilling fluid level within the annulus based on the time value, and update a drilling program for the well based on the state of the drilling fluid level.

Abstract: A method is disclosed. The method includes creating a chamber within an annulus between a wellbore casing and a drillpipe, wherein an upper boundary of the chamber comprises a seal and a lower boundary of the chamber comprises a liquid surface and determining a volume of the chamber at a first time. Determining the volume of the chamber includes measuring, using a pressure gauge, a first pressure within the chamber, changing an amount of a gas in the chamber, measuring, using the pressure gauge, a second pressure within the chamber, and determining a first volume of gas within the chamber based on the first and second pressure measurements and the change in the amount of gas. The method further includes determining a first fluid level based on the first volume of the chamber.
