Abstract: Monitoring a health status of a current interruption device, such as a circuit breaker, is disclosed herein. For example, a device for monitoring a current interruption device may include a processor and a memory. The processor may execute instructions stored in the memory to cause the processor to monitor one or more current measurements of current from an electrical conductor that delivers electrical energy to a load. The processor may provide a signal indicating a health status of the current interruption device based at least in part on the one or more current measurements.

Abstract: This disclosure pertains to control systems used in electric power systems. In one embodiment, a plurality of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) is configured to monitor a respective portion of an electric power system. Each IED may obtain electric power system measurements from the respective portion of the electric power system, determine electric power system operating conditions from the electric power system measurements, and transmit the electric power system operating conditions. A master controller may communicate with the plurality of IEDs. The master controller may comprise a communications interface configured to receive the electric power system operating conditions from the plurality of IEDs, a topology detection subsystem configured to determine a topology of the electric power system based on a common event detected by the plurality of IEDs, and an action subsystem configured to implement a control action or a protective action based on the topology of the electric power system.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for balancing electrical generation and electrical demand in an electrical power system. In various embodiments, a controller may receive priority designations associated with a plurality of loads and inertia of a plurality of electrical generators. A trigger event analysis subsystem may detect a trigger event based on electrical conditions at a plurality of nodes within the electrical power system. A topology detection subsystem may identify a first subset of the plurality of nodes at which electrical conditions reflect the first trigger event and may associate those nodes in an electrical island. An electrical balancing system and control system may be configured to determine and eliminate an imbalance between electrical generation and electrical demand based on the combined inertia of the subset of the plurality of electrical generators and the plurality of priority designations associated with the subset of the plurality of loads.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods for detecting and correcting a fault induced delayed voltage recovery event in an electric power transmission and distribution system. In some embodiments, a fault detection subsystem may receive an indication of a fault in the electric power transmission and distribution system. The system may also include a load analysis subsystem to analyze a plurality of loads supplied by the electric power system and to generate an estimated response of the loads. A fault analysis subsystem may analyze a plurality of factors relating to the fault and to determine a probability of the fault generating a fault induced delayed voltage recovery event. A control system may then implement a control strategy within a control window following the fault based on the probability of the fault generating a fault induced delayed voltage recovery event and the estimated response of the at least one load.

Abstract: This disclosure discusses systems, methods, and techniques for producing and utilizing a capability region of one or more monitored equipment. To do so, an intelligent electronic device (IED) may access a data set of one or more known performance characteristics of the monitored equipment. The known performance characteristics are based on, or dependent of, one or more variables. The IED may also access a constraint library with geometric primitives. Then, the IED may analyze the data set and may produce the capability region using the geometric primitive. The IED may compare an operating point of the monitored equipment to the capability region of the monitored equipment. Based on the comparison, the IED may implement a control action.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described herein to accommodate different settings associated with an inverter-based electric power generator for electric power generation within an electric power delivery system. The electric power delivery system may provide electric power generated by a bulk electric system to the loads via distributed substations using a first operating frequency. Moreover, the distributed substations may include inverter-based electric power generators to supply the electric power demand of downstream loads in an islanded configuration. That said, the inverter-based electric power generators may supply the electric power using a second frequency that is higher than the first frequency. Protective systems, positioned downstream from the distributed substations, may use different settings associated with the bulk electric system or the inverter-based electric power generators based on detecting the frequency of the supplied electric power.

Abstract: An intelligent electronic device (IED) may monitor wet stack residue buildup of a diesel engine. Once the wet stack residue accumulates to a certain amount, the IED may perform a mitigation procedure. Additionally, tracking wet stack residue buildup may allow an IED to attempt to prevent or reduce accumulation of the wet stack residue. The IED may track an operating power level of the diesel engine to estimate the rate of residue buildup.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to systems and methods of detecting discharge events on power lines. For example, a system may include an acoustic sensor that detects a sound wave emitted from a power line. The system may include a radio frequency (RF) sensor that detects a radio wave emitted from the power line. The system may include electrical sensor circuitry that detects an electrical parameter of power being delivered on the power line. The system may include a processor that determines that a discharge event has occurred based on the sound wave, the radio wave, and the electrical characteristic. The system may provide an output signal indicating that the partial discharge event has occurred.

Abstract: A frequency tracking system may use shaft speed and electrical frequency to estimate a frequency of a monitored machine. The frequency tracking system may convert shaft speed to a mechanical frequency and blend the electrical frequency and the mechanical frequency together to determine an estimated frequency. The frequency tracking system may blend the frequencies based on an operating state of the monitored machine and the frequency sensors.
