摘要: A charged particle beam transport system and method for linear accelerators includes a lens stack having two electrodes serially arranged along an acceleration axis between a charged particle source, and a linear accelerator. After producing and extracting a bunch of charged particles (i.e. particle beam) from the particle source, a voltage difference between the two electrodes is ramped in time to longitudinally compress the particle beam to be shorter than the pulsewidth of acceleration pulses produced in the accelerator. Additional electrodes may be provided in the lens stack for performing transverse focusing of the charged particle bunch and controlling a final beam spot size independent of the current and energy of the particle beam. In a traveling wave accelerator embodiment having a plurality of independently switchable pulse-forming lines, beam transport can also be controlled by triggering multiple adjacent lines simultaneously so that the physical size of the accelerating electric field is longer than the charged particle bunch, as well as by controlling trigger timing of the pulse-forming lines to perform alternating phase focusing.

摘要: A bipolar electrosurgical instrument has a pair of pivotable juxtaposed jaw members and a locking mechanism operatively associated with a second of the jaw members. The locking mechanism has a first position engaged with the second jaw member for preventing movement of the second jaw member between an axially aligned orientation and at least one angled orientation, and a second position. The second position is disengaged from the second jaw member allowing for movement of the second jaw member between the axially aligned orientation and the at least one angled orientation. The instrument has an actuation mechanism operatively connected to a first of the jaw members with the actuation mechanism operable to move the first jaw member between an axially aligned first orientation and at least one angled orientation. An articulation knob is operatively associated with the locking mechanism and effectuates independent operation of the locking and actuation mechanisms.

摘要: A dispersion-free radial transmission line preferably for linear accelerators, having two plane conductors each with a central hole, and an electromagnetically permeable material between the two conductors and surrounding a central channel connecting the two central holes. At least one of the material parameters of relative magnetic permeability, relative dielectric permittivity, and axial width of the permeable material is varied as a function of radius, so that the characteristic impedance of the radial transmission line is held substantially constant, and pulse transmission through the radial transmission line is substantially dispersion-free. Preferably, the electromagnetically permeable material is divided into concentric radial sections, with the varied material parameters held constant in each respective section but stepwise varied from section to section as a step function of the radius. The radial widths of the concentric sections are selected so that pulse traversal time across each section is the same, and the varied material parameters of the concentric sections are selected so that the traversal error is minimized.

The first level provides the second level with the first level operational parameters, and the second level provides the first level with the second level operational parameters, such that optimizing the operation within the first level and optimizing the operation within the second level are each a function of optimizing a system optimization parameter. The levels can include a railroad infrastructure level, a track network level, a train level, a consist level and a locomotive level.
