Abstract: A wireless telecommunications system includes a base station and a plurality of terminal devices. A first one of the terminal device is configured to communicate with the base station via a second one of the terminal devices, wherein the second one of the terminal device is selected from among a plurality of potential second terminal devices based on a measured characteristic of beacon signaling exchanged between the first terminal device and respective ones of the potential second terminal devices, wherein the beacon signaling is exchanged between the first terminal device and respective ones of the potential second terminal devices for a predetermined period of time.

Abstract: A communications system for device-to-device communications includes a group of plural communications devices, each configured to perform device-to-device communications via a wireless access interface with one or more other communications devices of the group. One of the communications devices is configured to detect interference in communications resources of the wireless access interface caused by signals transmitted by another communications device, and to provide, in response to detecting the interference, an indication of the interference to one or more of the communications device. By the communications device of the first group of communications devices detecting the interference and communicating an indication of the interference to the other members of the group, then members of the group can adapt the transmission and reception of data via the wireless access interface to avoid resources of the wireless access interface which is subject to interference.

Abstract: A wireless telecommunications system that supports a virtual carrier mode operation in which downlink communications are made by a base station while a terminal device receives at least some communications from the base station within a restricted subset of transmission resources. When there is to be a change in system information, the base station transmits to the terminal device an indication that updated system information is to be broadcast by the base station to plural terminal devices and the terminal device seeks to acquire the updated system information using the restricted subset of transmission resources. The base station further conveys to the terminal device an allocation of uplink transmission resources for acknowledgement signalling for the updated system information and the terminal device responds by using the allocated uplink transmission resources to convey to the base station an indication whether or not the terminal device has acquired the updated system information.

Abstract: A method of allocating resources for communications in a mobile telecommunication system wherein the mobile telecommunication system includes a wireless interface for a base station to communicate with communications devices and wherein a communications device is operable to transmit signals to another communications device using resources of the wireless interface and in accordance with a device-to-device communication protocol. A first pool of the resources is allocated to device-to-device communications of broadcast type and a second pool of the resources is allocated to a device-to-device communications of unicast type, the second pool of resources being separate from the first pool. The method includes a first communications device transmitting broadcast messages using resources of the first resources pool and a second communications device transmitting unicast messages using resources of the second resources pool.

Abstract: A communications device configured to transmit signals representing data to one or more in-coverage communications devices forming with the communications device a group, one of the in-coverage communications devices acting as an active relay node for the communications device, so that the in-coverage communications device can transmit signals representing the data to the infrastructure equipment of the mobile communications network, and to receive signals representing the data from the in-coverage communications device acting as the active relay node. The signals transmitted to the in-coverage communications device are received according to a device-to-device communications protocol, wherein the signals transmitted by the communications device or received by the communications device include an identifier which identifies the signals to the in-coverage communications device. One of the other in-coverage communications device can be selected by the infrastructure equipment to act as the active relay node.

Abstract: In a communications device a wireless access interface provides a primary carrier within a first frequency range, forming a primary cell providing a contiguous set of communications resources across the first frequency range. A controller is configured to generate data representing an estimation of a location of a communications device, to detect signals received within one or more predefined candidate channels within a second frequency range different and mutually exclusive from the first frequency range at the estimated location, each of the candidate channels in the second frequency range representing a minimum unit of communications resource. The controller generates, for each of the one or more candidate channels, channel measurement information from the signals detected within the candidate carrier at the estimated location, and transmits the channel measurement information with an indication of the estimated location of the communications device for each of the candidate channels to the infrastructure equipment.

Abstract: A communications device and method, in which data is communicated via a wireless access interface to a destination communications device with a device-to-device communication procedure. The communications device encodes the data, as data units, for transmission to the destination communications device with a repeat request-type protocol, the encoding providing an indication whether the data has been received correctly. The communications device transmits the encoded data units to the destination communications device, and receives an acknowledgement ACK message that one of the encoded data units has been correctly received by the destination communications device, or a negative acknowledgement NACK message that the encoded data units were not received correctly by the destination communications device. The ACK or NACK message is transmitted by another communications devices of a group of communications devices, acting as a relay communications device, which received and retransmitted the ACK or NACK message from the destination communications device.
