Abstract:
An expansible, compressed foam is used a s a filter medium and captured particulates are released from the foam by expanding the foam to open its pores. Micro-organisms such as Cryptosporidium or Giardia cysts may be trapped and recovered at high eficiency in a small volume of wash liquid easing further analysis. A foam filter element comprises thirty discs (36) of retriculated foam compressed between end plates (28,30) to about one tenth of their original thickness.
Abstract:
The method of removing fine suspended solids from an effluent stream comprising passing said stream through at least two contiguous layers of an open-celled compressible hydrophobic polymeric material and compressing said layers to remove the solids loaded therein to regenerate said material, said material being layered so that the open cells of each layer are randomly oriented.
Abstract:
An open cell, compressed, elastic plastic foam filter medium, having average diameter cell pore openings selected values ranging from 25 to 150 microns, is disposed as a planar volume in a an adjustable disposable filter press. The filter medium is disposed between a pair of rigid filter press plates, which are in turn disposed in the filter press structure. The press can provide an adjustable control means suitable for varying the average diameter of the pore openings, by varying the compression of the filter medium. A flexible, filter press case provide means of assisting blood circulation through the filter medium, and of separating air entrained in the blood in the filter press.
Abstract:
A fluid control device includes a support structure configured to be deployed to a selected location in a borehole, and a filtration medium disposed at the support structure and configured to filter a fluid, the filtration medium configured to be compacted from an initial shape to a compacted shape prior to deployment in the borehole. The filtration medium includes a first polymeric material configured to withstand a temperature at the selected location, the first polymeric material forming a porous structure including a plurality of fluid passages, and a second polymeric material including a shape memory polymer disposed within the fluid passages, the shape memory polymer configured to expand in the plurality of fluid passages and cause the filtration medium to expand in the borehole.
Abstract:
A stillage clarification process and related system include using hydrocyclones and high recovery disc centrifuges for fractionation of stillage from a grain ethanol plant and splitting the stillage into fractions with mass and compositional assays per bushel of grain processed. The fractions include a first fraction comprising 45% to 70% protein and 3% to 8% fat, a second fraction comprising distillers corn oil, a third fraction comprising a fiber having made up of approximately 22% to 28% protein and less than 8% fat, and a fourth fraction comprising at least 30% soluble protein and less than 3% fat.
Abstract:
A stormwater treatment system includes water treatment media that defines a helical flow path within a conduit. The water treatment media may include a plurality of helical water treatment media components that are constructed and arranged to seal against an inside surface of the conduit. The individual helical water treatment media components may be installed in situ within the conduit when the conduit is positioned within a chamber having an access opening, and periodically removed and replaced by passing the components to the access opening. The components further may have a flexible frame, which allows the water treatment media to dynamically adjust to swelling of the filtration media and other forces that may occur during use. The performance of the system may be adjusted by adjusting the helical pitch of the helical water treatment media components.
Abstract:
Water filters which comprise a multitude of discrete filter media elements in a chamber require periodic cleaning. However, the elements tend to become adhered to one another and to the interior surface of the chamber. The invention provides a water filter for use with ponds, comprising a filter chamber for containing filter media, and a first movable cutting member provided substantially immediately adjacent the interior wall of the chamber for movement across the surface of the interior surface of the wall to break the adherence of filter media to the interior wall.
