A tangential indexable cutting insert can be used for metal cutting processes in general and for radial and axial turning of a stepped square shoulder in particular. The cutting insert exhibits 180° rotational symmetry about three mutually perpendicular axes. The cutting insert has generally “S”-shaped cutting edges extending between raised and lowered corners. The cutting edges and side surfaces are concave in an end view of the cutting insert. The cutting insert enables radial and axial turning operations of a square shoulder with unlimited depth of cut.

The hole (12) includes a rotation-asymmetrical portion (16) including a plurality of radially bulging portions (17) extending in the direction of the hole, the transitions (18) extending substantially in the direction of the hole between adjacent bulging portions being intended to pairwise abutting against the locking screw (11) and guiding the insert towards the right positioning in an insert seat, before the insert is clamped. In this way, it becomes considerably easier to position the cutting insert, particularly when it has a larger number of cutting edges, e.g. six or eight.

A chip breaker surface extends from the side edge to the chip breaker edge. The chip breaker edge includes linear sections corresponding to the linear side edges of the tip and has curved sections which correspond to the curved regions of the side edges. The arc of curvature of both the curved regions and the curved sections is the same although the arcuate length of the curved sections is greater. The chip breaker surface extends from the side edges of the corner regions inward toward and downward into the tip at an acute angle where it intersects the chip breaker edges.

This application relates to a cutting insert and method for machining a workpiece. This application further relates to a method for the machining of a workpiece using such an indexable insert. In this case, the term “machining” means, among other things, the first-time machining and/or a re-profiling of a wheel or of a brake disc of a wheel set of a railway vehicle. An object of at least one possible embodiment of the present application is to create a cutting insert that is as economical as possible. An additional object of at least one possible embodiment of the present application is the most effective method possible and a lathe tool that is well-suited for the machining of a workpiece, such as for the copy turning and/or for the first-time machining and/or for the re-profiling of a wheel or of a brake disc of a wheel set of a railway vehicle, using a cutting insert described herein.
