摘要:
Apparatus for bending one or more glass sheets to a sharp bend by a combination of overall heating and localized heating using an outline glass sheet bending mold comprising one or more electroconductive heating elements in the form of a ribbon. Means is provided to tension the ribbon so that it does not wrinkle when the ribbon expands thermally due to the application of electrical energy thereacross. The ribbon is tensioned by one or more electrodes. Means is provided to maintain the electrodes attached to the mold in case the ribbon breaks.

This invention relates to a process and an apparatus for the manufacture of fused glass, suitable for molding, wherein the total time of manufacture is reduced to about one hour. The process accelerates the homogenization and refining of glass by eliminating unfused particles and gas bubbles which are the main factors limiting the production rate of industrial glass. This is accomplished by increasing the temperature of the molten glass to produce foaming throughout its mass while maintaining its viscosity below 1,000 poises.

A mechanical tamper-resistant interconnecting locking apparatus is connected to a top charge tiltable direct arc electric furnace which includes a refractory lined furnace shell and a removable roof covering a top opening in the shell. The apparatus includes a first locking mechanism which, when engaged, prevents the tilting of the furnace, and a second locking mechanism which, when engaged, prevents the swinging of the roof from over the shell top opening. A mechanical linkage interconnects the two mechanisms and prevents simultaneous disengagement of both of them. Also, once one of the mechanisms is disengaged and adjacent portions of the furnace are moved relative to each other, the entire locking apparatus is prevented from further movement until the adjacent portions are returned to the position providing lock mechanism engageability.

Hollow cylinders and tubes are made from vitreous silica by placing granular or powdered quartz or silica starting material on a granular bedding layer in a hollow form revolving about its axis and, as the rotation of the hollow form continues, melting by means of an electrical power source, and solidifying the starting material. An electrically heated hollow cylinder of carbonaceous material is disposed in the hollow form and the apertures thereof are hermetically closed with covers after the starting material has been put in. The sealed inner chamber thus formed is slowly evacuated with a vacuum to a pressure ranging from 10 to 0.0001 mm Hg. The starting material is slowly heated to the melting point while sustaining this pressure. After complete melting, the electric power source is shut off and the fused article is cooled while rotation continues. Thereafter, the vacuum pump is shut off and the inner chamber is aired before removing the cover. Lastly, the vitreous silica hollow cylinder which is still at temperatures between room temperature and 1400*C., is removed from the hollow form. Apparatus for making hollow cylinders from vitreous silica via the above-described process includes horizontally disposed, rotatable hollow form means adapted to be hermetically sealed with a cover means having a vacuum connection connected to vacuum means. Crucible means are positioned within the form means and a graphite vacuum baffle means extends into the hollow form means and the crucible means. A filling of refractory thermal insulation material is between the crucible means and the hollow form means.

A method and furnace for supplying glass for flat glass production in which the body of molten glass is contained in an elongate furnace chamber having melting and conditioning zones adjacent to opposite ends and an intermediate refining zone, the glass being subjected to general heating in the melting and refining zones while being substantially undisturbed in the conditioning zone, and a control column of glass being established in the refining zone by passing alternating electric current between longitudinally spaced transversely extending electrode arrays to establish a rising current or spring of glass, part of which flows horizontally upstream and part downstream at the surface of the glass to control the velocity and acceleration of glass flow in a surface layer of the conditioning zone.

A process for altering the residual stain remaining along the relatively sharp bend of a glass sheet resulting from the passage of an electric current through an electrically conducting path to effect the bend. The process includes interposing a strip of coloring agent between the glass sheet surface and the electrically conducting path lengthwise of the latter prior to electrically charging the same.

An electrical furnace particularly suitable for melting thermoplastic material used in producing glass fibers includes a tank having side walls constructed of a refractory material having an electrical conductivity greater than the material being melted at furnace melting temperature. In order to minimize electrical conduction through the side walls, first and second sets of electrodes are arranged with one set centrally disposed in the tank and the other set surrounding the first. Electric power is applied between the first and second electrodes to generate a potential field with substantially continuous equipotential lines between the second electrodes so as to shield the first electrodes from the side walls. An electrical control circuit limits the current flow between any two electrodes to prevent a runaway condition which might otherwise be caused by the steep negative temperature-resistivity characteristics of the glass. The control circuit includes a circuit which minimizes the DC component from current flow between the electrodes.

An atmospheric pressure induction plasma laser source which enables high power, large diameter laser systems to be operated at atmospheric pressures in materials having high melting points and which can be selectively excited in charge transfer or Penning reactions. The disclosed apparatus provides a nonmolecular laser that is operable at atmospheric pressure in a structure open to the atmospheric or in a circulatory system. It also will enable laser oscillation to be realized in elements and compounds that have heretofore been unable to lase due to their difficulty in vaporizing at reasonable temperatures.

Process and apparatus for producing glass ribbon having a thickness different from the equilibrium thickness by pouring molten glass onto a molten metal bath, advancing it over the bath and solidifying it by cooling, wherein the width of the glass ribbon is controlled by using rotors of an electrically conductive refractory material having a plurality of projections and disposed at each of the side edges of the molten metal bath at a predetermined angle to the advancing direction of the glass ribbon, which rotors are connected to an electric source and adapted to hold both side edges of the glass ribbon in its cooled but plastic state and either increase or reduce the width of the glass ribbon.
