摘要: Propagation of detonation between pallets of munition such as artillery sls is prevented by interposing an inert material having adequate density to render the fragments from a detonating pallet non-lethal when they reach explosive devices in a neighboring pallet. The material must be of a type which does not itself form lethal fragments and the material must be placed sufficiently close to the explosive devices that the fragments from an explosive have not had time to separate into individual pieces but, instead, produce a plate impact on the material. This latter requirement reduces or eliminates the need for any substantial strength in the material.

摘要: A composite semi-liquid system for thickening halogenated organic liquids, such as Freon 113 (a registered trademark of E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Co.) to improve safety in the formulation and handling of certain highly-sensitive-to-detonation mixtures, for example, a mixture of secondary and primary explosives, or a combination of a solid sensitive oxidizer with a pyrotechnic fuel. The thickened halocarbon is used in two stages, first a selected combination of gelling agents such as Cab-O-Sil M-5 (a registered trademark of the Cabot Corporation) and Bentone 38 (a registered trademark of N. L. Industries, Inc.) is incorporated into the halocarbon and the resultant slurry is then used to desensitize the explosive by admixture. The desensitized explosive is packaged in a container which is permeable to the halocarbon vapor and this package is immersed in a vessel containing a halocarbon gel obtained by selective gellation with gellants such as Alumagel (a registered trademark of Witco Chemical Co.); this second gel provides a means for preventing a rapid escape of the liquid from the vessel if a leak occurs.

摘要: A mitigation control system, for performing an active hazard mitigation method, is arranged in an environment containing an energetic material and includes an abnormal temperature sensor for detecting an abnormal temperature of the environment, a power source that is mechanically actuated by the abnormal temperature sensor when the abnormal temperature exceeds a predetermined abnormal temperature threshold, a mitigation controller that is actuated by the power source, and a plurality of local temperature sensors that are communicatively coupled to the mitigation controller and are arranged for detecting critical temperatures in specific regions of the environment. The mitigation controller executes a mitigation action when one of the critical temperatures exceeds a predetermined critical temperature threshold for the corresponding specific region.

摘要: An ammunition cartridge comprised of a projectile inserted in, and mechanically connected to, a metal cartridge case assembly having a propulsion chamber and a base, and an energetic propellant disposed in the propulsion chamber, includes a base plug in which is mounted an igniter with an energetic primer. During manufacture of the cartridge, a fusible support ring is incorporated into a metal cavity. The cartridge base includes a cavity allowing the fusible material to solidify at ambient temperatures. When exposed to heat from an external fire, the fusible support plug liquefies losing its strength and subsequently, when a propellant or primer off-gasses or auto-ignites the pressure from the reaction ejects a metal plug or lid from the cartridge case base, creating a void that allows the propellant and primer to combust in an unconfined space.

摘要: An electronic thermally-initiated venting system (ETIVS) for rocket motors includes at least one linear-shaped charge attached to a rocket motor housing. At least one exploding foil initiator (EFI) is attached to the linear-shaped charge. At least one electronic thermally-initiated venting system circuit is electrically-connected to the EFI. The EFI is configured to auto-fire when the electronic thermally-initiated venting system circuit relays a current pulse through the EFI. The linear-shaped charge is configured to initiate when the current pulse is relayed through the EFI.

摘要: A release mechanism includes a frame with an interior. The release mechanism also includes a prestrained element coupled to the interior of the frame. The prestrained element creates a seal with the frame. The prestrained element is notched in one or more regions. The prestrained element is configured to fracture when heated to a predetermined temperature allowing the interior to open. The fracture is based on the notched regions of the prestrained element such that separation initiates within the notched regions. The remaining regions of the prestrained element unfractured. The shape memory alloy element can include one or more of a nickel-titanium alloy, a titanium-nickel alloy, a copper-zinc-aluminum alloy, a copper aluminum nickel alloy, and a nickel titanium hafnium alloy. Heating of the shape memory alloy element causes a stress in the shape memory alloy that causes fracturing of the prestrained alloy when sufficient heating has been achieved.

A system comprising a communication node and a launcher comprising an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in a pre-launch state configured to receive and respond to command inputs from the communication node.
