The light-transmitting cover includes a lens portion (22) positioned so as to overlap a region that includes part of the frame region of the display panel and part of a peripheral display region (10D) within the display region which adjoins the part of the frame region. The display device further includes a housing (30) which has a housing portion (36) provided at least on a side surface (10b) of the display panel. Part of light going out from the part of the peripheral display region and/or part of light entering the housing portion on a rear side goes out on a front side of the housing portion (36). In the display device of the present invention, the frame is visually obscured, and the display region can be altered into a transparent state.

The gas discharge lamp includes a light transmissive envelope with an inner surface, having a light scattering reflective layer disposed thereon. A phosphor layer is coated on an inner surface of the light scattering reflective layer. A discharge-sustaining gaseous mixture is retained inside the light-transmissive envelope. The discharge-sustaining gaseous mixture includes at least 88% argon, by volume, at a low pressure. An electrode is located within the light-transmissive envelope. The electrode is capable of providing an electric discharge to trigger a reaction within the light-transmissive envelope to cause the lamp to emit light. The remainder of the discharge-sustaining gaseous mixture is substantially neon, at a low pressure. The low pressure is about 3.6 Torr.

A light bulb is disclosed comprising a base that has an enclosure and a socket connector and a base connector. The enclosure includes conductors for conveying electric power from the socket connector to the base connector. A selectively detachable bulb assembly is further included and has a bulb connector that is mechanically and electrically cooperative with the base connector to secure the bulb assembly to the base and conduct electrical power therethrough. The bulb assembly further includes an inner bulb having a transparent quartz inner layer with a transparent silicon outer layer, and a high intensity discharge (HID) lamp electrically connected to the bulb connector. An outer bulb contains the inner bulb and likewise comprises a transparent quartz inner layer with a transparent silicon outer layer. An instant-on bulb illuminates immediately until the HID lamp reaches its full luminosity.
